  Tobolsk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tobolsk was founded by Yermak's Cossacks in 1585-86 during the first Russian advance into Siberia near the ruins of Siberia Khanate's capital Qashliq.
With administrative divisions of the territory, Tobolsk remained the seat of the Governor-General of Western Siberia until it was moved to Omsk in 1820-30s.
Tobolsk is the only town in Siberia and one of the few in Russia which has a standing stone kremlin, or elaborate city-fortress, built at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries.

Saint John of Tobolsk was born in 1651 in Uman, in the Kiev Oblast of Ukraine.
He was the only one of the seven sons of Maxim Vasilkovsky Maximovitch to choose a career in the Eastern Orthodox Church, in which service he was appointed Ekonom of the Kievo-Pechersky monastery by 1678.
In 1711 he was made Metropolitan of the Siberian city of Tobolsk, taking the place of Metropolitan Philotheos who wished to carry out missionary work among the pagan tribes in more remote areas.
