  HOASM: The Toccata
Toccata suggests a touching of the fingerboard of a lute or similar instrument, though toccare was also used for plucking with the fingers and for striking the keys of a keyboard manual.
The mood of the century is felt, however, in the viol fantasies of John Cooper (Coperario), William Lawes, Matthew Locke (1632/3-1677), John Jenkins, and their contemporaries--not so much in their form as in their chromaticism, bold modulations, and soloistic and idiomatic lines.
The characteristic idiom of the toccata consists of scale-type passages, turns, trills, and short figures; these pass from hand to hand, while the hand not busy with them has sustained chords that often trace a descending or ascending diatonic line in the key of the piece.

Toccata - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Toccata (Italian for touched) is a piece of classical music for a keyboard instrument, generally emphasizing the dexterity of the performer.
The Baroque toccata, beginning with Girolamo Frescobaldi, is more sectional and increases in length, intensity and virtuosity from the Renaissance version, reaching heights of extravagance equivalent to the overwhelming detail seen in the architecture of the period.
His toccatas for organ are brilliant improvisatory compositions, and are often followed by an independent fugue movement.

 Toccata Press
Toccata Press is an independent publisher of books on music, expressly dedicated to tackling important subjects that other publishers have failed to address.
The most recent Toccata Press title, after Lionel Pike's penetrating analysis of the Vaughan Williams Symphonies, is a collection of essays on the life and music of the Scottish pianist-composer Ronald Stevenson.
Among other titles in preparation are a full-length analysis of Mahler's Tenth symphony by Steven Coburn, a symposium of essays on Berthold Goldschmidt, an edition of Martinu's correspondence and a study of the influence of French music on Nordic composers from the beginning of the twentieth century until the outbreak of the Second World War.

A file format for Toccata, which specifies a standard for describing and synthesizing pipe organs, is in development.
We are developing Toccata because we want people to play these organs now, and for them to be heard in homes and churches in the present rather than in an unspecified future when 64-bit operating systems are common, and 4 GBytes of memory standard in personal computers.
Toccata’s support for the VST standard brings many exciting possibilities, including the use of convolution (or sampling) reverbs, which are a feature of Allen’s Quantum series of digital organs.

toccata. The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001-05   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Early examples were written for various instruments, but the best-known form of toccata originated about the beginning of the 17th cent.
Free in form, it was one of the first attempts at idiomatic writing for keyboard instruments, in contrast to the strictly contrapuntal pieces of the Renaissance.
The toccata was usually rhapsodic, often interspersing rapid passages of brilliant figuration with fugal sections.

These stages, furthermore, show a 3-part arrangement within the Toccata which is identical to how Anodea Judith arranges the chakras in 3 parts, with the two base chakras and the two upper chakras mediated by three in between, and centered on the 4th chakra in the center or heart (see Wheels of Life, p.46, 183).
And in the Toccata in F by Bach, S. 540, clearly another great esoteric thought structure representing the 7 levels of the hero’s journey to victory over death, this worldly section of trumps corresponds to the first two bright, joyous, snake-like and sensuous canons followed by foot-pounding pedal solos.
Here are liner notes for the Toccata in F by Bach, quoted from Lionel Rogg's collection of organ works in 1970 at Arlesheim, on Harmonia Mundi, and notes by Harry Halbreich, translated by Frank Dobbins, from Michel Chapuis' great 1968 performance of the Bach organ works on Valois.

Bach/Stokowski: Toccata and Fugue in D Minor (via CobWeb/3.1 planetlab-3.cs.princeton.edu)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Toccata and Fugue in D Minor for Organ, BWV 565, arranged for orchestra by Leopold Stokowski, 1882-1977.
One of the best-known works of this period is the Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, a passionate, almost maniacal piece that seems more at home in late-night horror movies (where it has often been quoted) than in the dignified confines of a church organ loft.
In the current work, the theme of the fugue is based on the first few notes of the toccata, opening in the violins and gradually moving throughout the orchestra before the toccata itself returns for a grand finale.

The basis of the choreography is five pieces by J.S. Bach: Toccata in e-flat, Fantasy and fugue in a-flat, Französische Suite V in G-sharp, Sonata nach der Violinsonate in a-flat, d-flat, and Nur komm’ der Heiden Heiland.
This is in fact when the piece opens, with the Toccata in e-flat played by Jos van Immerseel, whose grand piano standing downstage drives a wedge into the dance floor (which is again in the form of two spirals revolving into each other).
The Italian word ‘toccare’ means ‘to touch’, but also ‘receive’ and ‘move’; in musical history the toccata is known as ‘the most free and noncommittal of all musical forms’.
