Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565 is a popular piece of music for the organ.
The possibility that the Toccata and Fugue is a violin-to-organ transcription is supported by the fact that, at least twice in his career, Bach is known to have transcribed solo violin works for organ.

Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 538 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 538, is an organ piece by Johann Sebastian Bach.
The "toccata" section of BWV 538 opens with a motoric sixteenth-note motif that continues almost uninterrupted to the end of the piece, and includes unusually elaborate concertato effects.
The fugue is long and complex, and involves a rather archaic-sounding subject which prominently features syncopations and an upward leap of a fourth.

Toccata and Fugue in D Minor for Organ, BWV 565, arranged for orchestra by Leopold Stokowski, 1882-1977.
One of the best-known works of this period is the Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, a passionate, almost maniacal piece that seems more at home in late-night horror movies (where it has often been quoted) than in the dignified confines of a church organ loft.
In the current work, the theme of the fugue is based on the first few notes of the toccata, opening in the violins and gradually moving throughout the orchestra before the toccata itself returns for a grand finale.

Science Fair Projects - Toccata and Fugue in D Minor
Toccata and Fugue in D Minor is the name of two different pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach: BWV 538 and BWV 565.
Apart from these differences, the style of the Toccata and Fugue is closer to that of the Passacaglia than that of the Goldberg Variations, especially the (seemingly) rhapsodic character.
Buxtehude's organ works are characterised by an extreme application of (pseudo-)improvisation: when Buxtehude called a work "Prelude and Fugue", it might start with an odd bit of fugue, followed by some cadenza-like improvisation (possibly on another theme), yet followed by some more fugue or canon-like passages, some more virtuoso firework, etc...

In its original form the C Minor Passacaglia and Fugue is written for the clavicembalo, a forerunner of the modern piano.
Bach's C Minor Passacaglia consists of twenty variations on an eight-bar theme the first half of which Bach borrowed from a Trio en passacaille by Andre Raison, a French organist of the Seventeenth Century.
The D Minor Toccata and Fugue, written during the composer's earlier years in Weimar (1708-1717), is among the mightiest works of Bach.

Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565 - Johann Sebastian Bach/Leopold Stokowski
As to the Toccata and Fugue itself, even Bach’s authorship of this ultra-famous piece has been questioned because of its unusually bold, virtuosic style and the fact that it survives only in manuscripts not in Bach’s hand—the oldest by his student Johann Ringk—which are full of unusual fermatas (holds) and dynamic markings.
Stokowski described Bach’s Toccata and Fugue as “among the freest in form and expression,” saying that it probably began as an improvisation.

In their compositions, the Toccata was an extended movement alternating free and fugal sections into a blend of improvisatory fantasy and strict counterpoint.
Almost forgot to mention that the Toccata is also in a E major version which is the prevalent key when the work is performed.
Marlow's performance of the C major Toccata is highlighted by a strongly heroic second fugue which is on the slow side.

For at least a century, Johann Sebastian Bach's memorable organ work, the Toccata and Fugue in D minor, has embodied the eerie and the supernatural.
The evidence of rule-breaking includes doubling at the octave and the curious minor cadence that ends the Toccata, both not heard elsewhere in Bach's organ output (usually even a work in a minor key concludes with a major chord).
Compared to learned Bach in compositions such as "The Art of Fugue" or "The Well-Tempered Clavier," the Toccata and Fugue in D minor is facile, dramatic and eccentric.

Tocatta and Fudged in D Minor | MetaFilter
By playing the work at A minor, rather than D minor, it fits the range of a violin very well, and many of the alternating 16ths in the theme end up with one string open, making them very easy to play, and so on.
The fact that BWV 565 has them is an argument that the fugue was written for an instrument that needed such, and not for the organ.
On the violin, the fugue is very much up to Bach's legendary skills, but other than the pedal work, it's very lacking on the organ.

Toccata & Fugue in D Minor (2000) by J.S. Bach
Whether audiences will resent the degree of re-compositional freedom Woods allows himself in the Toccata is, I suppose, going to depend on how much they actually liked the original (personally, the piece has always bored me to the point that, deep down, I don't really believe it's by J.S. Bach at all...).
The fugue is more respectfully done - and cleverly, too: a good deal of sensitive ingenuity is apparent (even if it will take jolly good players to prevent the divided-up figures sounding too 'choppy' in performance).

Although unfortunately rivaled in popularity by BWV 565, the Dorian Toccata is a wonderful energetic piece requiring three equally balanced divisions, and the fugue is one of Bach's most thrilling works, well worth the time it takes to listen to.
Carefully balanced registrations have been prepared using all three manuals, and a method of documenting all 11 of these in some sort of presentation package is a distinct possibility sometime in the future, in the meantime this knowledge will be hidden away in the Phantom's computers.
