Tochi river (Urdu: دریائے توچی) is located in North Waziristan, Federally Administered Tribal Areas, Pakistan.
Tochi river flows eastward, in North Waziristan, to join the Kurram River and the Indus.
It surrounds Waziristan in the North while the Gomal River river surrounds South Waziristan.

South of the river Kabul spreads the Koh-e-Sofed Range with a general height of 10,000 ft. Its highest peak, Skaram, being 15,620 ft. South of Koh-e-Sofed are the Kohat and Waziristan hills (5,000 ft) which are traversed by the Kurram and Tochi rivers, and are bounded on south by Gomal river.
The Tochi pass connects Ghazni in Afghanistan with Bannu in Pakistan and the Gomal Pass provides a route from Afghanistan to Dera Ismail Khan, which overlooks the Punjab Plain.
The Potohar Upland commonly called the Potohar Plateau, lies to the south of northern mountains and is flanked in the west by River Indus and in the east by River Jhelum.

The second method was placing a company, on the home bank of the river and flying a company from Dacca to the far bank of the river, turning the helicopters around and lifting the company placed on the home bank, the whole concentration would take about twenty minutes from the time the first company landed.
When the car stopped the man walked up to the vehicle and peeped inside, he was from the Tochi Scouts, he identified us and gave a signal, the commander stepped up to the vehicle and apologised for laying the ambush and aiming his weapons at us, we thanked our lucky stars that we had stopped.

The stations will help the hydrology division to get update weather forecasts, record rain and snowfall in high altitude areas and monitor flood level in various rivers in the NWFP and tribal areas.
They said that most of the rivers originated from the upper parts of the NWFP and its high altitude areas received heavy snowfall, therefore, the government should equip the hydrology division with its own monitoring facilities.

On reaching Boya one can continue on the bed of the river or take a turn to the left which brings you on the Boya plain which is very stony, but there is a road on which one can canter all the way to Dhagham which is six miles from Boya.
A few villages are on the side of the road and the hills about two miles from the bed of the river, though on the other bank the hills end in precipices.

To my mind, the key is that Miram Shah is on the Tochi river.
I'd bet Dollars against donuts that Osama's crew has to stay in or near the river valleys (logistics, stealth, etc.), and that would be why, to me, that the drone was going in for a closer look.
Stealth is found in the hundreds of tiny highlands villages, that dot both sides of the high mountain areas that surround Miram Shah.
