A Newspaper Association of America analysis of 789 papers found the average daily circulation for the six-month period ended Sept. 30 fell to 45.15 million from 46.35 million in the same period a year ago.
Indeed, newspaper circulation has been falling slowly since the 1980s and data shows that circulation generally represents only about one-third of the actual number of people who read the biggest newspapers.
As circulation has slipped, newspapers are focusing more on new sources of revenue, such as online editions of their print versions, and arguing that advertisers should consider broader measurements.
