Todd referred to his films as "shows," insisting that "movies are something you can see in your neighbourhood theater and eat popcorn while you're watching them." To drive home the distinction between "movies" and "shows," Todd's initial contract with exhibitors stipulated that no popcorn was to be sold in the theaters playing his films.
Todd sold this striptease to a middle class public by presenting it as a symbolic, moral tale that is told through dance.
Todd's attempt to duplicate the impact of Cinerama was even more ambitious, involving the development of image and sound technology that would be the equal of, if not superior to, that of Cinerama.

Todd-AO was a widescreen extremely high definition film format developed in the mid 1950s.
It was co-developed by Mike Todd, a flamboyant Broadway producer, with American Optical Company.
It was memorably characterized by its creator as "Cinerama outa one hole." Unlike Cinerama, the process required a single camera and one set of lenses.

Todd seems to be wearing the same clothes as seen in the bugeye photo at the top, clearly indicating that the photos of he and Dr. O'Brien were staged and not shot in a brainstorming session during early development of the system.
The system as put together by Todd's company and American Optical used 65mm Eastmancolor film in the camera, running at a speed of 30 frames per second, with the image five perforations high and an overall frame size of nearly 250% of standard 35mm.

The difference between Todd AO and Camera 65 was that this process used a slight 1.25 anamorphic squeeze during photography and a similar lens to unsqueeze the image during projection.
After the release of '80 Days' Todd was killed in a plane crash, and 20th Century Fox bought the process, and shot most of their big films for the next decade in Todd AO (a few other studios licensed the use of Todd AO as well).
This process was developed for M-G-M in reaction to Todd AO, and also shot onto 65mm, 5 sprocket hole high film frame, and usually projected from a 70mm frame with 6 track magnetic sound.

Dr. Brian O´Brien, AO heads of Research and Development knew a tremendous number of people and he was well aware of Philips projectors and their reputation of excellence.
Michael Todd, not satisfied with technical limitations of the Cinerama process, he formed a company with some investors, including Rodgers and Hammerstein II, Joe Schenk and George Skouras and named it MAGNA.
Those 50 machines were numbered from no 601 - 650 as the first machines (Some projectors were marked "Property of the Michael Todd Company, Inc").

 Cinema Treasures Cinestage Theatre
Mike Todd, of Todd-AO sound system fame, purchased the former Selwyn Theatre, after it closed as a legitimate playhouse, and converted it into the first permanent Todd-AO showplace in Chicago, known as the Cinestage (Todd also acquired the Harris, which was renamed for Todd himself).
The theater was also known unofficially as owner Mike Todd's laboratory, where he experimented with many different aspects of Todd-AO.
Thankfully, the facade of the building and its next door neighbor, the Michael Todd Theatre, were saved and now compose the facade of the new Goodman Theater which built its new home on the site of the old Cinestage and Michael Todd Theatres.
