All About My Mother - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
All About My Mother ( Todo sobre mi madre) is a 1999 film written and directed by the Spanish auteur Pedro Almodóvar, starring Cecilia Roth, Marisa Paredes, Candela Peña, Antonia San Juan and Penélope Cruz.
The title is a play on the film title All About Eve, of which Esteban is a fan.
Watching the film with his mother, he complains that the translation of the title into Spanish is a poor one, and should have been "Todo sobre Eva." "Todo sobre mi madre" is also the title of an essay he is writing at the time of his death.

The key line in Agrado’s wonderful monologue onstage the night the cast is unavailable is, “a woman is more authentic the more she looks like what she has dreamed for herself.” This is not simply in respect to her physical self, but also applies to her emotional terrain.
When the curtain closes on All About My Mother, Manuela has crafted herself into a mother once again, a part she was born to play.

Like Eve, All about My Mother is about actresses and relationships between women, but its focus is on mothers.
The storytelling is complex but not confusing; the large number of characters who anchor, explain and propel the story are individuated and fleshed out to such a degree that, without distracting from Manuela's adventures, we get a sense of their lives beyond their relation to her.
In the hands of a lesser director All about My Mother might have poked fun at La Agrado's condition, pitied Huma for being hooked on a junkie or blamed Lola for the havoc she's wreaked.

On the day of his seventeenth birthday, Manuela and Esteban go to the theater to see "A Streetcar Named Desire", a play which reminds her of the time, many years before, when she played the part of Stella and Esteban's father the part of Stanley Kowalski.
As an undercurrent that invisibly propels the plot, Manuela's search for Esteban's father, "Lola", becomes mostly representative of the masculine figure as a force that fades or dies, and of the liberating effects of the solidarity between the women.
All About My Mother's visual and narrative representations of these issues are honest, unrestrained and entertaining.

Almodóvar (and he already came up with this in The Flower of My Secret) assigns half of the film to engrossing the indirect presence, mentioned or suggested, of a character who is absent...
Like the first of the threesome, La Flor de Mi Secreto, it focuses on one woman's grief, in this case Manuela's (Cecilia Roth) for the loss of her son Esteban; but like the second, Carne Tremula, it boasts a complex plot and a collection of characters whose lives intersect with great precision and deadly effect.
The storytelling is complex but not confusing; the large number of characters who anchor, explain and propel the story are individuated and brought to life to such a degree that, without distracting from Manuela's adventures we get a sense of their lives beyond their relation to her.

All About My Mother is the latest film from Pedro Almodovar who's previous films all seem to have met with critical acclaim and numerous awards.
The cast is virtually entirely female and, while the course of the film may be a direct result of the actions of men, the male parts are undoubtedly secondary, if not superfluous.
While this is all extremely tragic the film soon explores unexpected directions as Manuela's world is soon populated with a whole host of contrasting women including a nun, (Penelope Cruz) and a transvestite/transsexual, (Antonia San Juan), who together prove to be a constant source of humour and compassion.

The biggest problem I have found, seeing foreign, subtitled films at the cinema, is that a substantial minority of the members of the audience seem to think that, because one can't necessarily understand the language spoken, and it's all there in the subtitles, then there's no reason not to talk all the way through it.
