The hill name was the original for a cemetery on its south slope -- now renamed the Morovian Cemetery and the resting place for Cornelius Vanderbilt (founder of the rail dynasty that built New York's Grand Central Station).
His grandson, William K. Vanderbilt was born on the hill and at one time owned Glen Oaks, the highest point in Queens.

Todt Hill on Staten Island is the highest point along the Atlantic Seaboard south of Maine.
"Todt" is a Dutch word meaning "dead." This hill probably received its name from the Dutch settlers because the hilltops overlooking the Verrazano Narrows consisted of scattered treeless rocky exposures.
The enrichment of magnesium in the thin soil covering the glacier-scoured hilltops is probably responsible for the original barren exposures on Todt Hill.

I find myself correcting lots of people who say it is the highest on the East Coast (thus ignoring Cadillac Mountain et al).
In any event Todt Hill is about 2 miles from the ocean (we're talking ocean not bays).

When I was a kid we used to go up Todt Hill Road and about halfway up the hill to the left was a limestone cave, they called it, it really wasn't all that cave-like.
There was a steep hill called the ski jump.
There was little skiing on the Island in my time there, except at the Richmond County Golf Club up on the top of Todt Hill, as far as I knew, and perhaps at Silver Lake.

In what legal experts said was the first murder conviction won with help of a MetroCard, Christopher Stewart, 36, was found guilty yesterday after his alibi was demolished because Transit Authority computer records showed he used his card on mass transit.
Stewart said he was at the St. George ferry terminal on Staten Island on his way to Manhattan when his ex-girlfriend Angelique Williams, 29, was stabbed to death outside the Todt Hill Houses on March 8, 2001.
The bus passes Stewart's home in the Livingston neighborhood and the Todt Hill Houses.
