Nagano was formerly known as the province of Shinano, and was divided among many local daimyo during the Sengoku period.
Nagano was host to the 1998 Winter Olympics, which gained the prefecture international recognition as well as gaining the prefecture a Shinkansen line to Tokyo.
Nagano is also the prefecture which is bordered by the highest number of other prefectures in Japan and it contains the location which is the furthest point from the ocean anywhere in Japan.

After a stroll around the temple before dusk we had dinner and then popped out to the temple again to see it before all the illuminations were switched off.
My Nagano host reserved the flight for me, but I only paid for it when I got to the airport.

Soon after the wrap-up of the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, our gracious hosts from Togakushi Kogen Kyokai (Togakushi Highlands Church) requested four students to take part in a summer of evangelism, construction, and fun!
Four students from SBC plus two from other U.S. churches volunteered to take part, and they met in Togakushi, Japan in late July.
In February of 1998, a team of about 30 Americans from Southwest Bible Church joined the many travelers bound for Nagano, Japan to attend the 1998 Olympic Games.

Start at Togakushi Ski Area, climb to the summit and decend to Togakushi Onsen and the village down the south ridge (see a map).
