In the News (Mon 6 Jul 09)

Togawa Jun - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Togawa Jun (戸川純, born 31 March 1961) is a Japanese singer and musician.
Her mash-up of "lolita" voice, straight singing, screaming, and operatics, married to traditional Japanese melodies, militaristic marching themes, and techno-pop continue to endear her to Japanese "maniac" fans, such as devotees of horror or erotic manga, particularly young women.

Celebrating Jun Togawa's 20th year in the entertainment business, this half-hour mini-album originally released in 2000 is here reissued with a bonus CD-EP accompanying the first 1,000 copies.
Togawa's singsong vocals move in harmony with the clarinet, only occasionally going off on their own tangents.
Togawa's vocals are chanted in a sort of naive way, in steady syncopation with the bum-bum-bum bass.

The Ultimate Togawa Jun - American History Information Guide and Reference
Togawa Jun is a Japanese singer and musician born in 1961.
She began her career in the early 1980s as a rather unique idol singer (or possibly a parody of an idol singer) with the single "Virgin Blues".
Influential alternative musician and producer Jim O'Rourke known for his work with Sonic Youth amongst others, picked a Togawa Jun album "Goodbye 20th Century" as one of his "best albums of the year" in an interview in 2001.

Jun Togawa - 20th Jun Togawa - Review - Stylus Magazine
Togawa is by no means a great singer, but that’s not the major problem here—we’re not talking spastic, confrontational punk; we’re not talking charming, seductive crooning; we’re just talking “I have a voice.
Next to “Comme a la radio”, the highest moment on 20th Jun Togawa is the cover of Patti Smith/Bruce Springsteen hit, “Because the Night.” I always hated this song—inflated dramatics and MOR pop is a sour mix indeed—therefore I didn’t mind Togawa’s total deconstruction of it.
Here, Togawa sounds like an off key Japanese Cher—zonked out of her mind—singing the national anthem at the languid hour of a rave and the music (performed by The Saboten) is too tired to even be called music exactly—more an audible groaning of equipment.

OTOMO YOSHIHIDE'S NEW JAZZ ENSEMBLE: Dreams
The other featured vocalist is Jun Togawa, once described in Nadir magazine by John Zorn as "[one of the] few artists in the world whose career is one of growth, where you can see them learning, getting better and better with each album".
In a middle section so intimate it feels like a violation, Jun Togawa sings, almost speaks in a gentle murmur, every syllable a caress, the soft tap of lips and tongue echoed by Yasuhiro Yoshigaki's trumpet growl and wail (a pre- and post-bebop sound, from Bubber Miley to Don Cherry in its earthiness).
In a sudden liberation from the preceding solemnity and restraint, Phew and Togawa speak in tongues, screech, shout, abandon sense and word in a frenzy of wah-wah assault, reed violence, drum mania, electronic surgery.

Inviting along two vocalists --the legendary Phew (who sung on the Novo Tono album) and the more obscure Jun Togawa-- to front the songs, the album is, to much of a degree, a pop-record.
With Togawa and her childlike voice featured on the opening track, "Preach", this capricious mixture of high-art tonalism and songform sentimentalism immediately recalls the work of one of the most idiosyncratic and inspiring artists currently working in music, Japanese avant-diva Haco; and for much of the record that comparison serves well.
At their best, though, the Ensemble are like some great out-rock band, gathering their Quintet of players on saxophones/percussion/guitar/contra-bass into contemplative, melancholy pieces; and, then, alternately, driving those same instruments into massive, wrung-out finales that find the gathered spiritualist conviction of psychedelia.

This one is altogether different, most notably due to the presence of female vocals, provided by Phew and Togawa Jun. Phew is no stranger to fans of experimental Japanese music, and her earthy voice turns many tunes that would be straight-ahead jazz ballads into introspective tone poems.
Jun, meanwhile, doesn't quite possess Phew's command of atmosphere, but adds a less weighty compliment to the music nonetheless.
Her more aggressive side can be heard on "Hahen Fukei" and the amazing "Teinin Pushiganga", but her voice seems tailored for the calm before the storm.
