SAN XAVIER, Ariz. - Tohono O´odham and Yaqui leaders told a United Nations representative that a proposed wall along the international border on O’odham ancestral land would bring further misery to indigenous peoples already suffering from the militarization of the border.
Currently, when O´odham go to Mexico for help, they are told to go to their relatives in Arizona, the Tohono O´odham Nation.
On June 5, an O´odham grandmother, mother and her son were threatened at gunpoint by two Border Patrol agents a mile north of the international border.

According to the mythology of the O'odham people, the first Saguaro was created when a young woman sank into the earth and rose back out as a giant cactus, arms raised toward the heavens.

At least one member of the Tohono O'odham (toe-HO-no O-dum) Indian tribe in Southern Arizona is inspired by the Puerto Rican demonstrations, and wants the U.S. military off his ancestral land.
Wilson says that this type of stress may not seem as damaging as the bombings in Vieques, but like Puerto Ricans on that island, he feels that the land belongs to HIS people and not the U.S. military.
While President George Bush promised to remove the Navy from Vieques in 2003, the department of defense plans to continue their military training on the Tohono Oodham's traditional lands until 2024.

The Tohono O'Odham Career Center offers apprenticeship training in carpentry, electrical, heavy equipment, painting, facilities maintenance, plumbing, sheet metal and computer peripheral equipment operator.
The training is done with on-the-job training as well as related classroom instruction with college credits.
