On 2 November, air observers reported large numbers of enemy troops moving toward Tokchon and from the Tokchon area the First Battalion of the 9th reported its "A" and "B" Companies under heavy small arms fire.
Because the terrain at Tokchon was not suitable for defense by only one battalion, the First Battalion was ordered to positions south of Kunu-ri moving by way of Suchon.
And Tokchon was a vital key to control of the road network behind the front lines.

When morning came on 26 November it was understood that the Chinese Forces had penetrated the front of the II'nd South Korean Army Corps situated in the Central Segment of the front and that they had stalked behind the U.S. Divisions situated on the western segment of the front.
Especially the Chinese Forces, advancing towards Tokchon from the area of the II (Second) South Korean Army Corps had started to threaten the Eighth Army and specifically the IXth (U.S.) Army Corps.
The Brigade was given the task of capturing the town of Tokchon.

Tokchon fell during mid-morning and it became imperative that the 2d Division line be held north of Kujangdong if the 38th Infantry was to have a route for the withdrawal which now appeared to be a strong possibility.
Just before Tokchon was captured, the liaison team from Division Artillery, which had been attached to the ROK's holding the town, was surrounded.
Planes were sent out from the Division immediately and landing on a makeshift strip within the crumbling perimeter lifted out every member of the team from under the very noses of the attacking forces.

The flow of messages and changed orders to the Turks on the road to Tokchon on November 27 reflected the lack of precise information and the high level of uncertainty that IX Corps and the Eighth Army experienced as they struggled to interpret the rapidly enfolding events.
One certainty was that, during the day, the Chinese attacked the leading 1st Battalion at Wawon and this ambush inflicted the devastating blow to the Turks.

The Tokch'on Motor Plant in Tokch'on-Kun, South Pyongan Province, and the Maram Kaengsaeng Plant located close to Pyongsong City and Pyongayang City, South Pyongan Province, are the only motor vehicle production bases in North Korea.
Tractors are produced at the Kumsong Tractor Plant, Chollima District of Namp"o City, and the Pukchung Machinery Enterprise in Yongch'on-Kun, North Pyongan Province.
The Tokch'on Motor Plant has started producing improved versions of the Sungli-58 freight trucks (2.5-ton), T'aebaeksan (hauling capacity of 6 tons, production stopped in 1981), and Chaju (hauling capacity of 30 tons) for the military.

The precipitation in the West Coast areas recorded 32 millimeters in Haeju, South Hwanghae Province, at minimum and 165 millimeters in Maengsan, South Phyongan Province, at maximum.
The rainfall was above 100 millimeters in Tokchon, Pukchang and Yodok, 71 in Kaesong and 60 in Hwangju.
For three hours from 18:00 on Thursday, it rained 115 millimeters in Tokchon, 110 in Maengsan, 88 in Pukchang, 78 in Thaechon, 48 in Pyongyang, 36 in Kusong and Jongju and 60 in Kumya, South Hamgyong Province.
