Many "tokens of appreciation" of various kinds have been issued over the years, and token collectors have ordered the striking of a full spectrum of tokens for this purpose, from personal tokens giving their specialties and membership affiliations to artificial rarities (mulings and off-metal strikings of genuine trade tokens) for purposes of exchange.
Amusement tokens were introduced around the turn of the century to play early slot machines (and legalize them in some localities by avoiding payoff in currency) and became very common during the 1930's before virtually dying out in the 1950's.

Carolina tokens, depending on their condition and whether they are of the “ER” or “OR” variety, usually fall in between the New England and London types with respect to their rarity ratings and market values.

This 29mm wide, perforated brass or copper advertising token (2.90HJ) was found by Hank Johnson while metal detecting at the ghosted town of Old Rouse, Colorado in 1988.
In overall very good condition and heavily patinated, the token is embossed on one side with the image of a crown seated atop of which is a longhaired animal, and the words THE 20TH CENTURY SHOE.
The full-face view of the lion on the obverse is underlined with the words 'LION BUGGY CO.' 'ANCHOR BUGGY CO.' is raised on the long bar and the hooks of the anchor on the reverse.
