ITNW 2313 - Exploring Token Ring Specifications
Token Ring uses a non-contention token-passing architecture that adheres to the IEEE 802.5 standard.
Token Ring adapter cables have an IBM Type-1 unisex data connector at one end and a nine-pin connector at the other.
The node side of the Token Ring adapter cable is a standard DB-9 male connector using only pins 1, 5, 6, and 9 (the outside narrow edge pins).

Token ring - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Token ring frames travel completely around the ring in a counter-clockwise direction.
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers or IEEE (http://www.ieee.org (http://www.ieee.org)) later standardized a token ring LAN system as IEEE 802.5 (http://www.8025.org (http://www.8025.org)).
When no station is transmitting a data frame, a special token frame circles the ring.

Token ring is the IEEE 802.5 standard that connects computers together in a closed ring.
Although the token ring stations are attached to the MAU in a physical star configuration, a true ring is maintained inside the MAU.
The adjusted ring length of a token ring network is the sum of all cable lengths between wiring closets, minus the shortest cable between wiring closets.

 Token Ring/IEEE 802.5
Token Ring and IEEE 802.5 networks are basically compatible, although the specifications differ in minor ways.
If a station possessing the token does have information to transmit, it seizes the token, alters 1 bit of the token (which turns the token into a start-of-frame sequence), appends the information that it wants to transmit, and sends this information to the next station on the ring.
After the token is seized and changed to an information frame, only stations with a priority value higher than that of the transmitting station can reserve the token for the next pass around the network.

What is Token Ring? - a definition from Whatis.com - see also: 802.5
- A Token Ring network is a local area network (LAN) in which all computers are connected in a ring or star topology and a bit- or token-passing scheme is used in order to prevent the collision of data between two computers that want to send messages at the same time.
The Token Ring protocol is the second most widely-used protocol on local area networks after Ethernet.
When a computer has a message to send, it inserts a token in an empty frame (this may consist of simply changing a 0 to a 1 in the token bit part of the frame) and inserts a message and a destination identifier in the frame.

What is token-ring network? - A Word Definition From the Webopedia Computer Dictionary
A token, which is a special bit pattern, travels around the circle.
To send a message, a computer catches the token, attaches a message to it, and then lets it continue to travel around the network.
(2) When capitalized, Token Ring refers to the PC network architecture developed by IBM.
