Two kiwi eggs were transferred from the Sanctuary on Tuesday November 4 to be incubated at the Kiwi and Birdlife Park in Queenstown as part of the Bank of New Zealand Kiwi Recovery’s Operation Nest Egg programme.
The technique of incubating tokoeka eggs is being confirmed as a backup measure in case a stoat plague occurs inside the sanctuary during a breeding season.
The sanctuary is home to an estimated 200-300 tokoeka which are ranked as a nationally critical species.

Over the 2005 - 2006 season Willowbank has become involved in the South Island Operation Nest Egg Programme where eggs from Haast Tokoeka and Okarito Brown Kiwi are taken from the wild to hatch at the facility run by the New Zealand Conservation Trust based at Willowbank.
It is expected over the next season that up to 60 eggs will be pulled from the wild to be incubated in this way as the predation in these areas is very difficult to control.
There is a small range of colour for these kiwi, from russet red to almost fl and the occasional albino.
