Tokomaru Bay is a bay and town located in the remote East Cape (Gisborne) region of New Zealand’s North Island, 100 km (60 miles) northeast of Gisborne city and close to Mount Hikurangi.
The seven-kilometre wide bay is small but sheltered, and was a calling place for passenger ships until the early 20th century.
NB: Tokomaru Bay should not be confused with Tokomaru, a township near Palmerston North in the southern North Island.

Tolaga Bay is both a bay and small town on the East Coast of New Zealand's North Island.
Because the bay is shallow, a long wharf - the longest in New Zealand - was built to accommodate visiting vessels.
An island in the bay was originally named Spöring Island by Cook, after his expedition's assistant naturalist and instrument maker, Herman Spöring, a Finnish botanist.

The Maori meeting house, Ruatepupuke II, was built at Tokomaru Bay, Aotearoa, New Zealand, and opened in 1881.
The house was in disrepair by the late 1880s or early 1890s, and eventually was dismantled and sold to a dealer in Maori curios sometime in the 1890s.
Beginning in 1992, the house was reconstructed with the endorsement and assistance of the Maori people of Tokomaru Bay, and in 1993 was formally reconsecrated and opened again to the public.

Te Kumeroa Ngoingoi Ngawai was born on 29 December 1921 at Tokomaru Bay, East Coast.
She was the eldest of five children of Hori Ngawai of Te Whanau-a-Ruataupare of Ngati Porou of Tokomaru Bay, and his wife, Wikitoria Te Karu, of Ngati Koi in the Hauraki region.
Considered an expert at adjudicating kapa haka competitions, she was frequently called upon to judge both in New Zealand and Australia and at festivals such as the Tamararo cultural competition, held annually in Gisborne, and the New Zealand Polynesian Festival (later the Aotearoa Maori Performing Arts Festival).

Hi, in August 1999 I went on a trip from Tokomaru Bay on the East Coast of the north Island of new Zealand to Huntly north of Hamilton in the central north Island in Waikato country.
I was surprised that luckily my van kept going and did not miss a beat, there was some minor slips and a cross at the site of the accident.
I made it home to my small place at Patutahi west of Gisborne for the night, with the intention of travelling to Tokomaru Bay some 100km north the next day.

Yet I couldn't get a roving service whilst in Rarotonga but more telling the reception in Tokomaru Bay was non existent in parts and sporadic at best.
Interestingly those people who had Vodafone had no problems with reception in Tokomaru Bay.
