 South Waikato - History
The first sawmill in the district was installed by the Taupo Totara Timber Co. of Putaruru, in 1903 at Kopokorahi, 9.5km south of Tokoroa.
The company owned a small area of bush on the hill summit, it was from this area that the logs were snigged and shot down the steep hillside arriving in the vicinity of the mill and tram line.
One of the special features of Tokoroa is that people from over 25 different national origins have made their homes in the town giving Tokoroa multi-culturalism that no other New Zealand community can match.

Tokoroa residents will get a leaflet in their letterboxes this week (from Monday, Sept 9) giving them tips on reducing air pollution in the town.
Tokoroa has problems with air quality in winter, especially during mornings and evenings, when smoke from home heating adds fine particulates to the air.
Burning wood was likely to cause most of Tokoroa’s air pollution, and 82 percent of residents used wood fires, which did not burn as cleanly as other fuels.

 Tokoroa Street Names
Kinleith was named by David Henry, the then Director of the mill, in recognition of the Kinleith Paper Mill on the waters of Leith near the Pentland Hills and Edinburgh in Scotland.
This street was named in 1946 by the Tokoroa Progress League when it was envisaged that Bridge Street would have a bridge over the railway line linking State Highway 1 to Billah Street to avoid the level crossing.
Mr Logan was an early Chairman of the “Town Committee” (1957) and an inaugural member of the Tokoroa Citizens and Ratepayers’ Association, formed 4 December 1950.

An exhibition entitled Homeboy/homegirl ’04: Tokoroa Reprezent, curated by Leafa/Janice Wilson and sponsored by the South Waikato District Council, is running at Waikato University’s WEL Energy Trust Academy of Performing Arts till 29 August.
The curator and Tokoroa artist, Leafa/Janice Wilson set out to show how this group of artists had been shaped by the unique cultural environment of this creative south Waikato town.

On the weekend of Novermber 6/7, the Tokoroa RC Club held its twice-annual Jet rally, an event which attracted turbine fliers from all around the North Island.
