The Battleship Yamato Memorial Tower was erected in April 1968 on Cape Inutabu, located in the southwest part of the small island of Tokunoshima.
A sign in front of the tower gives the official name as "Memorial Tower of Special Attack Fleet with Battleship Yamato as Flagship," so the memorial honors the men killed in all ships that sunk.

Kamato Hongo, who lives on the island of Tokunoshima in southern Japan, slept through most of the celebrations to mark her extraordinary achievement, according to her family.
Tokunoshima island was also home to a man who reached the age of 120 - the greatest age ever recorded - and there are now more than 20,000 people over the age of 100 in Japan.
The reasons for their unusual longevity could be a diet rich in sea food and low in fat, or Japan's strong welfare system and family support networks.

On Monday Japan celebrated Respect for the Aged Day, a public holiday, when 140 members of her family and neighbors held a party for Hongo, who slept through the gathering as she normally sleeps for two days and stays awake for two days.
Though she uses a wheelchair and has difficulty hearing, she can move her arms enough to perform the traditional dance of her birthplace of Tokunoshima Island off Kagoshima.
Kurauchi said Hongo is weak but not ill and occasionally enjoys "shochu" an alcoholic drink traditionally made in the Kyushu region, where she lives.

These are all being sold as coming from Tokunoshima Island, where they can be caught legally, in contrast with most other islands in their habitat, where they are protected.
I've just heard that authorities in Kagoshima Prefecture (where Tokunoshima is located) are now considering enactment of legislation to prohibit collection of wildlife in the prefecture's southern islands.
I've also heard speculation that the ones found on Tokunoshima are a different species, or at least a different subspecies, than the protected ones found further south in Okinawa Prefecture.

All the other ALTs had gathered and bought their tickets, and I was still waiting for Tammy, Dan, and Amy to show up with the ticket they had bought for me. I didn’t really wait that long, and I only mentioned it cuz there was a vampire involved.
We boarded the ferry for Tokunoshima on the biggest ship I’ve ever been on (which is not really saying anything), and we headed out.
In the proper morning (sun had risen) I noticed the clear blue day, and went again to the deck and watched Tokunoshima get closer and closer.

A British journalist from the Guinness Book of World Records was on assignment to interview Shigechiyo Izumi, the world's oldest documented living person, a sprightly 115 year old man in remarkable good health.
When he looked at the other inhabitants, he noticed many elderly people in their 80's and 90's who were very healthy and unusually lively.
Later, the average life span on the islands of Okinawa and Tokunoshima was determined to be 106 years without the usual problems associated with old age!

Tokunoshima was beautiful and quite sunny, I did in fact get burned, which is extremely rare, in fact it's the first time I can recall being burnt (though not badly unlike some of our more fair-skinned *cough*british*cough* friends).
Tokunoshima is indeed beautiful, with both beaches and rocky coastlines.
At 9:30 I arrived back at Kagoshima after my 16 hour long ferry ride from Tokunoshima island, then hopped a train to Yokogawa, walked home from the station, and drove to work.

JAS added two extra flights to its regular three Tokunoshima to Kagoshima flights to transport about 690 passengers, including those who had been stranded on the island because of the JAS accident.
