Tokyo Disneyland first opened to the public at Urayasu, just outside Tokyo on 15th April 1983, twelve years after The Magic Kingdom opened at Walt Disney World, and twenty eight years after the original Magic Kingdom theme park opened at Disneyland in Anaheim California.
One of the unique things about Tokyo Disneyland is that the various lands are not accessed by the central hub, but instead by a series of paths that branch off of the Main Street.
Unlike the original Disneyland in Anaheim, and later Walt Disney World in Florida, Tokyo Disneyland doesn't have it's own Monorail system, however if monorail rumours are to be believed this may soon change.

One interesting aspect of visiting Tokyo Disneyland is that all of the "face characters" (the ones with exposed faces, such as the Disney princesses) are non-Asian, to keep an authentic look.
When I visited Tokyo Disneyland with some American friends, we waited in line for a photo with Mary Poppins and Burt (wearing their Jolly Holiday attire), and as each Japanese guest approached, Mary and Burt spoke with them beautifully in Japanese.

The shows are MAJOR draws for the parks, since TDL is close to Tokyo and is veiwed as a "date spot".
I do not think that there is a major reason for anyone to travel to TDL to see what they could see at any of the other DLs.
It does not yet have a MAJOR thrill ride, but the details of the park and the scale of the project is something that Disney simply does not do anymore.

Well, getting tickets to the annual Tokyo Disneyland "New Year's Countdown Party" is tougher than getting a seat on a subway during the morning rush hour in central Tokyo!

 Tokyo 2003 - Tokyo Disneyland:Space Mountain
To walk through the queue area and ride Space Mountain in Tokyo was like stepping back in time to 1979 when I first rode Anaheim's.
They have the same track layout, but the projections on the ceiling were a bit nicer.
The lack of music was a slight bummer, but then again the music was fragged the last 2 times we rode at Disneyland so no real diff.
