Welcome to the Tokyo Game Show, the annual celebration of games and gaming culture in a country long considered the spiritual home of video games.
But in many eyes, gaming still suffers the stigma of being geeky and anti-social and has a long way to go before it reaches the cultural acceptance it enjoys in Japan, where most homes have at least one console and video games are played by all ages and both sexes.
About 25 per cent of all games at the show were for mobile phones, and Nintendo's DS and Sony's PSP also had a strong presence.

The first day is reserved for game industry professionals and journalists, with the weekend being open to all the public wishing to queue and pay for the honour of experiencing the noise and crush of people and PR and oversized laminated bags with single A4 marketing sheets in them..
One more odious aspect of the game show, which has become more prevalent over the years, is the idiotic idea you are not allowed to take photographs.
The show in Germany might be the one to take over the torch from E3, because I don’t think TGS can muster the energy and enthusiasm it once might have had.

The Tokyo Game Show (TGS) 2006 happened about two weeks ago, but Rae and I were editing this video and working, so boo.
Tokyo Game Show 2006 is curently the game industry’s second largest show and it celebrated it’s 10 year anniversary this year.
Every year, spectators can roam between different game developer pavillions and try out some of the newer games (if you enjoy waiting in lines for 45 minutes and up) and collect mass piles of advertising crap.

The trailer also showed off some of the new gameplay features that are planned for the game, such as Snake jumping in a barrel and rolling through enemies.

PS3 consoles at the show itself weren't quite as easy to touch, guarded in their display enclosures, but nonetheless it was the first time such an onslaught of playable PS3 software was available to consumers and the media.
Throw in the consumers on day two of the show, who of course reacted positively to PS3, and you have a position that looks and feels very different to the one Sony found itself having to deal with coming out of E3 this year.

Microsoft's Tokyo Game Show press conference had quite a few choice revelations, above and beyond 1080p for the 360.
The Tokyo Game Show takes place in the Makuhari Messe, which is, as its name does imply, in Makuhari in Chiba prefecture.
That is the main reason so many 360 games a filled with jaggies as developers don't or can't write tile renderers as their games are already running in the just playable 20-30fps range already.

If a game looks like it might be a real winner, we'll award it "The Official PSP Fanboy Entranced Korean Award." These are the games that'll end up in Korea on giant PSPs, luring people to their eventual doom.
One game that we haven't heard a lot about is Goshow's Lost Regnum, but the game, which is a dungeon-crawling hack 'n slasher, found its way to the Tokyo Game Show.

In the end, they can probably put it on a DVD and sell it for $70 in Japan, but that's not going to fly in the U.S. But you know, at least Square is being upfront about their intentions.
Many of the titles at the show leaned more towards "visual content" than "games" - this is the part where I complain about the glut of 3D action games.
The Japanese game industry is busy environment mapping the deck chairs on the Titanic, and it's only going to get worse from here on out.

Kutaragi almost single-handedly pushed gaming into the DVD era, and was instrumental in the development of the PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PSP and PlayStation 3.
Five will be for the regular section of the game and five will be for the new "solo section" of the game.
