The Tokyo Shimbun newspaper reported Tuesday that passengers at the Kodenmacho station in downtown Tokyo spotted and chased a man who had left a vial of vaporous liquid on the train shortly after 8 a.m.

On January 25, 2005, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported on plans by at least eleven victims of ATM card fraud to file lawsuits against eight banks in the district courts of Tokyo and Yokohama.
The suit, which includes claims of ¥41 million in damages, will challenge the banks’ refusal to compensate victims of ATM fraud on the grounds that they, and not the banks, are responsible for the security of their cash cards and relevant personal information, such as identification numbers.

The Tokyo District Court Tuesday dismissed a libel suit brought by the families of two soliders in the Japanese Imperial Army who were alleged to have participated in an infamous competition to be the first to behead 100 Chinese during the army's advance on Nanjing in 1937.
However, the Yomiuri Shimbun reports that some in the Liberal Democratic Party are questioning a Horie candidacy, and have delayed an announcement of approved new candidates that had been scheduled for Thursday.
Within days of her announcement, The Asahi Shimbun published an extensive op-ed piece (longer, in fact, than many of the stories about the original announcement) she had written detailing the problems faced by gays and lesbians in Japan and urging the government to develop a legal framework for dealing with them.

UFJ is regarded as the weakest of Japan's big four banks, behind Mitsubishi Tokyo Financial Group, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp. and Mizuho Holdings.
According to a report in the Tokyo Shimbun newspaper, UFJ will raise its target for reducing problem loans from the original plan of four trillion yen ($33 billion) to between six and eight trillion yen ($50-$66 billion).
