Tokyopop, formerly known as Mixx, is a distributor of manga in English, German, and Japanese.
Tokyopop also licenses and publishes manhwa, anime and translated Japanese novels, and produces "Cine-Manga" (also called "animanga"; a line of graphic novels using still shots taken from animated or live-action television shows and movies) and original manga-style comics in English and German.
Tokyopop and HarperCollins have also been criticized for their decision to classify as "manga" the comics they are to produce under their new publishing agreement.

Tokyopop's unethical way of handling new creators will be big news in 2005 too if they don't change their policies.
Tokyopop pays the lowest advance ($15,000) with an unachievable $2,000 incentive to finish faster than humanly possible (typically 4 months for a 176 page book).
I've been glad to see Tokyopop giving opportunities to upcoming creators, but if they're using their position to take advantage, that curbs my enthusiasm quite a bit.

Critics charge that these changes compromise the anime viewing experience, watering down and Americanizing it and making it less "authentic." This has spread to their manga series, with the renaming of Ikki Tousen as Battle Vixens, and Karin as Chibi Vampire, when Karin herself is far from chibi.
Most notably, after several well-translated Anime releases, Tokyopop angered many fans of Initial D with a substandard "Americanized" dub of the Anime.
They suggest that the misnomer is being used to exploit the current popularity of Japanese manga in the United Staets--of course, at the expense of the proper denotation: comic.

Then in 2002, TOKYOPOP made a change that had manga purists cheering: the company decided to publish the anthologies in their original right-to-left format (essentially, they "unflipped" the comics) and left in the Japanese sound effects which, while impossible for Americans to understand, were an important part of the overall art.
TOKYOPOP is also interested in branching out to American comic books, and is currently looking for American artists and writers willing to write and draw fl and white anthologies.
