Tolkien's innovation was to take epic storytelling a step further: In its scope, detail, and realism, his creation of Middle-earth is a literary achievement that competes with any in world literature.
Tolkien has spawned a whole international subculture of escapism and fueled a boom in science fiction and fantasy that's now 10 percent of the total trade-book business.
Freed from fashion, Tolkien wrote his mythology in a "thou" and "lo!" days-of-yore style and didn't worry whether it was seen as high art or bedtime story.

Tolkien Newsgroups FAQ: Story External Discussions
The published version was directly inspired by some of Tolkien's drafts of the tale (those which seemed easiest to reconcile with the rest of the story), but was essentially rewritten to be consistent with the rest of the book and to include a few ideas from Tolkien's later writings.
Tolkien's works draw from quite a few periods of human history, and many aspects of Middle-earth distinctly resemble their real-world counterparts in the Middle Ages.
And it is notable that Tolkien described Forlong's people of Gondor and even the men of Bree as "swarthy", the same term he used for example of the Southrons who were ambushed by Faramir (though to be fair, he may have imagined different degrees of "swarthiness" for those groups).

Wheaton College: Faculty focus: Meet Michael Drout, Tolkien scholar and former E-bay user (2001)
In fact, Drout now shares Tolkien's scholarly interests and field--Medieval literature--and is working on three ambitious Tolkien projects: creating the world's most comprehensive database of works about the author and Oxford professor; working with colleagues internationally to establish Tolkien Studies, a new scholarly journal, at Wheaton; and editing long-lost Tolkien manuscripts for the writer's estate.
Tolkien's increased popularity during the height of the Vietnam War is no coincidence, according to the Wheaton professor.
Tolkien's messages about power and the lack of pure good and pure evil seemed to ring true with many young people at the time.

In October Drout was chosen by the Tolkien Estate to edit Tolkien's translations of Beowulf and his many commentaries on the poem.
Drout will publish the Beowulf translations in two volumes, one of the translations themselves, one of commentaries on the poem that he is drawing from over 1800 manuscript pages of material provided by the Tolkien Estate.
He says he recognizes it as Tolkien's translation of a famous passage of an Old English poem called "The Wanderer." He would be happy to speak with you about the relationship between Tolkein's fascination with Old English and renewed interest in the antiquated tongue as a result of the trilogy.

 J. R. R. Tolkien - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tolkien met and fell in love with Edith Mary Bratt at the age of sixteen, though she was three years his senior.
Tolkien was a devout Roman Catholic, and in his religious and political views he was mostly conservative, in the sense of favouring established conventions and orthodoxies over innovation and modernization.
Privately, Tolkien was attracted to "things of racial and linguistic significance", and he entertained notions of an inherited taste of language, which he termed the "native tongue" as opposed to "cradle tongue" in his 1955 lecture English and Welsh, which is crucial to his understanding of race and language.

JRR Tolkien started imagining the world and mythology of Middle-earth as early as 1916, and never ceased working on the stories and legends pertaining to this world until his death in 1973.
The author wished for his third son, Christopher Tolkien, to become his literary executor after his death, and Christopher's first task was to organize the huge volume of papers that JRR Tolkien had created during his lifetime ; the first published work on the subject to appear was « The Silmarillion » in 1977.
Christopher Tolkien then pursued his study of his father's papers and developed in detail the history of the author's writings and the evolution of the mythical and legendary conceptions in the course of his lifetime, in « Unfinished Tales » (1980), and the twelve-volume « History of Middle-earth » (1983-1996).

Christopher Tolkien ``was viciously condemned" by critics when he published ``The Silmarillion" in 1977, Drout said.
``Almost all literary estates have fragments that people try to breathe life into," he said, ``though often the reason they were not published is that the author thought the work was not worthy to publish.

She receives hundreds of e-mails and letters about the Tolkien materials (most of which she answers by pointing out that the manuscripts of The Lord of the Rings are at Marquette University, not Oxford), and she warned me that some fans were, well, aggressive.
This is not to say that Christopher Tolkien ever asked me to change a word, even when I pointed out mistakes his father had made in the first draft (these are admittedly minor: Ælfric for Alfred or a misattribution of an Old Norse passage presumably made because Tolkien was quoting from memory).

During Tolkien’s last years, when it was becoming apparent that he would not produce any more major titles, Allen and Unwin looked around for other ways of cashing in on the extraordinary interest that had grown up around Tolkien and Middle- earth.
