English 321: Tolkien & Oxford Christianity
The notions of the magical and supernatural on which Tolkien draws through the trilogy came from his deep love of Northern myth, and especially the Old Norse sagas and Anglo Saxon poetry of the heroic age.
Tolkien was a great scholar of Anglo Saxon and Old Norse, and brought about a revolution at Oxford by insisting that such works as
Then Frodo kissed Merry and Pippin, and last of all Sam, and went aboard; and the sails were drawn up, and the wind blew, and slowly the ship slipped away down the long grey firth; and the light of the glass of Galadriel that Frodo bore glimmered and was lost.

THE METAL OBSERVER - JRR Tolkien - A Metal-pioneer?
Well, of course it is not pure coincidence that it is Tolkien, who is this source for inspiration for so many bands and artists, with "The Lord Of The Rings" being the very first Fantasy-epos that has reached a place in world-literature, the majority of this genre usually looked down at as mere fairy-tale-stories.
An absolutely exceptional position where Tolkien and Metal are concerned is taken in by the Austrian two-man-band SUMMONING, which bases its complete concept as a band onto "The Lord Of The Rings".

Bilbo Baggins lives a pleasantly stodgy and dull life in the Shire, in a luxurious hole under a hill ("It was a hobbit hole, and that means comfort").
Author J.R.R. Tolkien had been crafting his mythos of Elves, Dwarves, Wizards and Men for years before writing "The Hobbit," but "The Hobbit" is the first story that people had the opportunity to read.
Tolkien's writing is quick and light, while providing sufficient detail to let you picture what's going on, but also letting his words paint the landscapes, the atmosphre of Mirkwood and Laketown, and the menace of the goblins.

METAL SIDE: Many death/fl/thrash and power metal bands use names from Silmarillion and Lord of the Rings (for instance Morgoth, Amon Amarth, Gorgoroth, Narsilion or Dungortheb) to call themselves.
Thrash metal (and metal in general) is an underground form of music that should stay that way.
METAL SIDE: Are the relations between the musicians and fans in Michigan strong and honest enough to say that the underground isn’t only an empty word in case of the scene in your state?

Mithril - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is possible that this legendary material was meant to be titanium, as this metal, while actually quite abundant as ore, was very expensive to produce in its metallic form (especially by medieval technology), and has some of mithril 's properties of strength, bright silvery colour, corrosion resistance, and light weight.
Other possibilities are aluminium or magnesium; these metals are even lighter than titanium, but not as strong, and were more expensive to produce in medieval times.
Given the presence of magic, mithril might not be a solid metal, but a composite instead; such as metal foam or a conventional metal with carbon nanotube reinforcement.

Blind Guardian is an over-the-top power metal band from Germany, so think Scorpions I guess, but with operatic vocals that show some Queen influences, and a few Medieval bits and short drama pieces added in for flavor and to move the story along.

It's no different today, as many bands continue to push the envelope, such as Nile's thoroughly researched songs about Egyptology, Battlelore's unique brand of Tolkien metal, and most notably, the style that has come to be known as Viking metal.
Scandinavian metal bands have always been reverential to their Nordic heritage, to the point where some acts, including Amon Amarth and Grand Magus, carry on like they believe their rampaging, seafaring warriors.
Other than that, Vinland Saga is a classy slice of melodic metal, one that avoids cheesy trappings and symphonic bombast, revealing a heart that beats underneath all the power chords.
