Toll House Inn near Whitman, Massachusetts was established in 1930 by Kenneth and Ruth Graves Wakefield.
Ruth died in 1977, and the Toll House Inn burned down New Year's Eve of 1984, but her cookie lives on.
Although there are many manufactures of chocolate chips today, the agreement to publish the recipe of Ruth Graves Wakefield on the back of each package of Nestlé Toll House chocolate chips is still honored in the 21st century.

The house had originally been built in 1709, and at that time it had served as a haven for road-weary travelers.
She and Kenneth sold the Toll House Inn in 1966 to a family that tried to turn it into a nightclub.

The chocolate-chip cookie, also known as the Toll House Cookie, was accidentally developed by Ruth Graves Wakefield, owner of the Toll House Inn near Whitman, Massachusetts, in 1930.
Wakefield was making chocolate cookies but ran out of regular baker's chocolate and substituted broken pieces of semi-sweet chocolate, assuming it would melt and mix into the batter.
While the Toll House recipe is considered the standard, the ingredients can be adjusted to give the cookies slightly different properties.
