Not only because precious Celtic and Roman finds around Szekszárd make it unequivocal that there was flourishing viticulture in this region of Tolna County as early as some 2000 years ago, but also because this area had played an outstanding role as part of the Kingdom of Hungary well before the Turkish occupation.
Yet there was no way the county seat could have avoided the damages inflicted by the planned economy: the life of well-off and experienced wine growers was made impossible and the most prestigious slope of the region, the Bakta, also faced the lot of the worst class enemies.
The vineyards were replaced by housing estates and today only a few vines remain on the slopes to serve as living proof of the special conditions that exist here.
