  Tom Cheek (1939-2005)
Tom Cheek was first diagnosed with a brain tumour last summer and had surgery to remove it on June 13, 2004, his 65th birthday.
Cheek attended the Cambridge School of Broadcasting in Boston and began his radio career in Plattsburg, N.Y. He then moved to Burlington, VT, where for nine years was corporate sales manager and sports director for a group of three radio stations, doing play-by-play for baseball, basketball, football and hockey at the University of Vermont.
Tom Cheek was nominated for the Hall of Fame's Ford C. Frick Award this year, which is given for major contributions to baseball broadcasting.

Cheek, who died at his home in Oldsmar, Fla., was best known for his streak, which ended at 27 1/2 seasons on June 3, 2004, because of his father's death.
Cheek was in good spirits this spring and was to be back in the booth in 2005 until a second round of cancer hit him in the spring.
Cheek, who was born June 13, 1939, in Pensacola, Fla., is survived by his wife, Shirley, their three children and seven grandchildren.

Whether it was former players, media executives or the millions who listened to Cheek for the better part of three decades on the radio, his was a pioneering voice that both immersed and educated them on America's pastime.

Tom Cheek was born on 15 April 1917 at Harrison, Arkansas.
Tom's first sea duty was aboard the carrier USS Lexington (CV-2), known affectionately to her crew as the "Lady Lex".
From 1 April 1942 to 26 April 1942, Tom Cheek was detached for temporary additional duty with fighter squadron VF-6 aboard the carrier USS Enterprise (CV-6), and flew Combat Air Patrol (CAP) to cover the launch from USS Hornet (CV-8) of the historic Doolittle bomber raid on Japan on 18 April 1942.

Today, as someone who's on a low rung of the sports media, he's still a hero to me: I keep reminding myself that he worked in smaller markets until the age of 37, when the Jays hired him to be their first announcer.
