Tom Cora ===================================================== There was nothing that I remember about Tom Cora that would have led me to suspect he'd go on to make such a distinct mark in creative music.
Tom Cora remained at the forefront of brilliant composition and striking improvisation until his death in 1998, at the all-too-early age of 44.
Cora was as much a personal as a musical contributor to his various milieux; he was much loved and is sorely missed.

Tom Cora Page in Fuller Up, Dead Musician Directory
Tom Cora, 44, New-Music Cellist With Flair for the Avant-Garde Tom Cora, a cellist, composer and improviser who was a mainstay of the new-music scene in New York City, died on Thursday at a hospital in Draguignam, in the south of France, where he lived with his wife and son.
Cora, whose original surname was Corra, grew up in Richmond and took up the cello while an undergraduate at the University of Virginia.
Cora fell into a circle that included John Zorn, Eugene Chadbourne, Andrea Centazzo, Butch Morris and Fred Firth, and he became known for highly amplifying his cello and for playing sawed chords and percussive riffs on it as if it were an electric guitar.

Tom Cora's death, at 44 in 1998, not only robbed music of one of its few improvising cellists, but also of one versatile enough to move seamlessly between jazz, rock, improv and something resembling "ethnic" music.
Also, with French lyrics and tunes that appear to relate more to the folk tradition than out-and-out improv, Cora is reduced to one musician among many on those tracks.
On the later, Cora gets a meditative solo section to himself, which them bleeds back into the bouncy jig-like main melody enlivened by some high register soloing from Douglas.

Tom Cora’s premature death in 1997 was a tragic blow to contemporary music.
One of the founding members of the downtown improvising scene, Tom was a vital member of some of the most important cutting-edge groups of the past twenty years, including Skeleton Crew, The Ex, Curlew, John Zorn’s game pieces and Eugene Chadbourne’s pre-Shockabily projects.

This release is not only emotional, for the intense, loving commitment it shows to Cora's music, but also important, in that it illuminates the undervalued brilliance of a significant improviser and extraordinary cellist.
Lesli Dalaba's enchanting solo trumpet, Wayne Horvitz's delicate and haunting solo piano, a calm cosmic tape collage by Tom's neighbor and artist Thierry Azam, from the adventurous improv of Miya Masaoka/Larry Ochs/Bob Ostertag and Elliott Sharp/Frances-Marie Uitti to the melancholy beauty of Zeena Parkin's trio with her two sisters Sara and Margaret.
This is an outstanding two and a half hour journey, an obvious labor of love, capturing the vibrant spirit that made Tom Cora a giant part of the downtown community for two decades, even after moving to southern France.

Ex, The / Cora, Tom: Scrabbling at the Lock: Squidco
Originally released on RecRec Record (Switzerland), this is the first of two meetings between The Ex and the late cellist Tom Cora.
Cora, a downtown NY improviser and half of the intesely creative rock band Skeleton Crew (along with Fred Frith), is in excellent form on this release; the cello is a rare instrument in rock, and is usually relegated to melodic backup or sympathetic playing.
Set alongside the socially active and rhytmically advanced "punk" group The Ex, they create a raging fire that has to be heard to be understood.

And from Tom’s words that day, Cora’s heart soared as purpose and destiny came together, forming ideas that pooled into, what she planned to tell Margo, a strategy for enriching lives.

Cora smoothed her hair with a sweep of her hands and pushed the coarse wiry mop over her shoulders.

Traffic Continues - Fred Frith - Song Listings
There are two lengthy pieces, the 29-minute "Traffic Continues" and the 35-minute "Traffic Continues II: Gusto (for Tom Cora)," an homage to the phenomenal cellist who with Frith was a member of the avant rock band Skeleton Crew.
At the closing, the music hovers in stasis with Cora's cello a ghostly presence; the full Ensemble then gradually reenters in a stunningly beautiful passage.
Tom Cora's untimely death was a tremendous loss, and anyone listening to "Gusto" will realize that Cora was not only a wonderful collaborator to Frith, but also a fellow life traveler and friend.
