  William Godwin
Godwin was born on 3 March 1756 at Wisbeach, Cambridgeshire, the seventh of thirteen children of John Godwin (1723-1772) a dissenting minister, and his wife Anne (c1723-1809), the daughter of Richard Hull, a ship-owner engaged in the Baltic trade.
Godwin begins by defending the importance of political inquiry and refuting claims that moral and political phenomena are a function of climate, national character or luxury.
Indeed, Godwin's account of pleasure, in terms of the development of intellect and the exercise of its powers, means that the position looks as much like perfectionism as it does a form of hedonistic utilitarianism (what is valued is the ideal as much as the pleasures which are integral to it).

Dani Zweig's Belated Reviews #24: Tom Godwin   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
I've been concentrating primarily on major authors and primarily on novels, but Tom Godwin gets in largely on the strength of a single short story.
It should be understood, at least in part, as a reaction to a subgenre of 'problem' stories, which typically got solved by the protagonist's pulling a scientific or technological rabbit out of a hat.
The three stars are a compromise between four, for how much I enjoyed it, back when, and two, for the plot holes I generally ignore and the writing that isn't equal to the author's vision.

Needless to say, Godwin stacked the deck with his auctorial control of resources the pilot has on hand—if he hadn't done so, there would be no story.
The situation is somewhat different; she is alone in a spaceship with a parasitical alien that could be a danger to her world if she returns, so she does the "only neat thing" by heading outward forever, in effect committing suicide by eventual diminution of resources.

This failure undermines the characterization of Barton as empathetic and compassionate; his decision is not justified given both his feeble attempts to find a compassionate alternative and his reasoning behind condemning her to death.
Barton does not attempt to devise additional ways to save his stowaway; instead, he is limited by his trained devotion to the "laws" of space, and his training unreasonably overcomes his compassion.

Tom Godwin, in "The Cold Equations," very carefully sets up a physical world that is no different from ours except that they had figured out the physics of interplanetary travel and had colonies on multiple planets in mulitple solar systems.
All that never seems to keep sociology students from assuming that the social dynamics of the story are bound to overcome the physical laws of the universe, the "cold equations" Tom Godwin goes to so much literary trouble to set out in the opening pages of the story.
It's easy to see the laws of the physical universe operating with the "cold" certainty Tom Godwin shows us in the short story.
