Ruth Harkin is an attorney and was one of the first women in the United States to be elected as a prosecutor when, in 1972, she was elected to the office of county attorney of Story County, Iowa.

Harkin was born in 1939 in the Iowa town of Cumming, population then 150, and grew up with five brothers and sisters in a small two-bedroom house.
During one of his Republican opponent's speeches, Harkin forced his way onto the stage and shouted that the incumbent congressman was telling "a pack of lies." In the November election the young anti-war Harkin lost, swept away in the 49-state landslide against 1972 Democratic standard-bearer Senator George McGovern.
Harkin's wife Ruth, whom he met when both were studying law at Catholic University, moved from the powerful law firm of Vernon Jordan and Robert Strauss - Akin Gump Strauss Hauer and Feld - in 1993 when appointed by President Bill Clinton as chairman and CEO of the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC).

In other news ignored by the media, Iowa Republicans have discovered that the Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) campaign bugged the campaign headquarters of his opponent, Congressman Greg Ganske.
Reuters reports of the apparent felony, "Sen. Tom Harkin's campaign has admitted leaking a transcript of his Republican opponent making sharply worded comments at what was supposed to be a private strategy session." This is worse than Watergate, folks!
Clearly Tom Harkin doesn't have the heartland values that the farms of Iowa are famous for.
