For decades, Levitt's philosophy - that Alta and the Albion Basin are for the public and should be left open and free with no further development - has been this resort community's mantra.
Levitt's detractors call the policy hypocritical, pointing out that the mayor himself lives on a hillside along the dirt road to the basin.
Levitt first set foot - actually it was a ski - in Alta during a Thanksgiving holiday trip in 1954.

It is true that all dictatorships require at least general acquiesence, but throwaway remarks like Levitt's seem completely ignorant of the difficulties of collective action in Iraq.

High Peak Labour MP Tom Levitt has come under fire for sending out a "misleading" letter to his constituents over council tax.
Marc Godwin, the Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for the High Peak, said: "Mr Levitt's letter is misleading and tries to give the impression that people in the High Peak will be worse off under a Lib Dem local income tax.
But Mr Levitt hit back at the comments, saying that although council tax was not perfect, the Liberals' option for funding local government was clearly worse.
