Tom Mees was an American sports broadcaster specializing in ice hockey.
After six years in Wilmington and one year in Tallahassee, Florida, Mees was hired by ESPN as one of their first on-air personalities for the network's launch on September 7, 1979.
It was assumed that Mees would be with the network for many more anniversaries but on August 14, 1996, Mees, who was unable to swim, drowned while attempting to save his 4-year-old daughter, Gabrielle, who had fallen into a swimming pool.

Mees became sports director in 1978 at WECA-TV in Tallahassee, Fla., and following year, he was named SportsCenter anchor at ESPN's inception.
Mees returned to the University of Delaware several times to emcee the Blue Hen Hoop Club banquet, and he handled the commentary on ESPN for Delaware's North Atlantic Conference men's basketball championship game victory over Drexel University in 1992.

Mees was sports anchor at a Tallahassee, Fla., TV station that also was doing some play by play work for replayed FSW football games.
Tom was interested in getting more involved in play by play and Parsons suggested that Mees send a tape to the new sports network in Bristol, Conn., that was planning to do a television replay of the Florida State-Arizona State game played in Orlando, Fla.
Mees took Parsons’ advice and instead of getting the play by play job, he was hired to join George Grande, Bob Ley and Chris Berman as one of the first four SportsCenter anchors.

I still love all of ESPN's nfl programming though...jaws, merril hodges, steve young, tom jackson, and of course the man, the myth, the legend Chris Berman.
He should have been the one to drown in that pool, not Tom Mees.
The thing is, I loved the tandem of Olbermann and Patrick on Sunday nights, if for no other reason than they were different from the rest of the crew at the time (Tom Mees, Robin Roberts, Bob Ley, Charley Steiner to some extent).
