Tom Regan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tom Regan (born November 28, 1938 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) is an American philosopher and animal-rights activist.
Regan argues that non-human animals are what he calls the subjects-of-a-life, just as humans are, and that, if we want to ascribe value to all human beings regardless of the degree of rationality they are capable of, then in order to be consistent we must similarly ascribe it to non-human animals.
Regan points out that we routinely ascribe inherent value, and thus the right to be treated with respect, to humans who are not rational, including infants and the severely mentally impaired.

 TheVegetarianSite.com: Philosophy: Tom Regan
Regan does not deny that experience and usefulness to others do have value, but he is careful to distinguish this sort of value from the inherent value of the individual: He asserts that individuals have moral rights based on their inherent value.
Regan asserts that justice is our paramount duty, "the duty not to treat individuals differently in the absence of a relevant dissimilarity." By his respect principle, all subjects of a life, as a matter of justice, have a basic moral right to respectful treatment, which recognizes their inherent value.
Regan cautions that the opposition is likely to frame animal rights as "antihuman." But he reminds us that to require just treatment of animals is to ask for nothing more than in the case of any human to whom justice is due.

Systematically unraveling claims that human beings are rational and therefore entitled to superior moral status, Regan defends the inherent value of all individuals who are "subjects of a life" and decries the speciesism that pretends to separate human from nonhuman animals.

Regan responds to some (although, unfortunately probably not the best) of his critics on these points and shows that their criticisms either just *assume* that animals don't have rights and/or are riddled with argumentative and logical blunders.
Regan's critics are advised to take (or re-take) a logic course and learn what it is to "beg the question" and commit the "fallacy of irrelevance" before forming a new attack on Regan's arguments.
Regan also adopt the role of historian and documents that the objections raised in religious and scientific communities to abolishing slavery and for increasing rights for women, minorities, and homosexuals are very similar to the objections currently raised against the notion of animals having rights.

Regan (The Case for Animal Rights) is well known as a rights advocate, while Cohen (Naked Racial Preference: The Case Against Affirmative Action) is considered one of Regan's most ardent detractors.
