Riddle's diary has an ability, similar to that of a Pensieve, to take someone back in time in a memory, so they can witness an event in a magical virtual reality simulation.

And considering that Tom is a wizard, and must have had magical accidents like all wizarding kids have, there's a good chance the other children must have thought of him as a freak.
I don't believe Tom had an easy time those first couple of years at Hogwarts, especially since none of the adults would have cared much for his situation, as is shown throughout the HP books.

Tom definately chose a life of power and conquest without regard to the morality of his choice, thus he accepted the worst possible outcome as viable.
I think that it was Merope's death that caused Tom to be so incredibly hateful because of the circumstances under which she died.
I think it is interesting that the young Tom thinks that his mother could not possibly have been a witch because she died.

In light of this the Riddle manor would provide an excellent base of operations because as far as we know the only persons initally aware of the connection between Voldemort and Tom Riddle are Harry and Dumbledore.
But personally, while I found the HBP flashbacks effective and creepy and all that, I was a bit let down by the way they seemed to show that Tom Riddle didn't have much humanity to him even when he was still fully human.

Yeah, I know he's only the most powerful evil wizard ever to exist, but as I know one person who would be mad at me if I didn't put up a page in his honour, I figured I might as well.

Only I and AM would have to change, anyway, so if you wanted to give riddle a very similar name to the one is English language books all you would have to do would be to tweak around with it a bit...
