glbtq >> arts >> Robinson, Tom
Rock musician Tom Robinson was embraced by the gay rights movement when he sang "Glad to Be Gay" in the late 1970s, but found himself the subject of controversy in the 1990s when he chose to live with a woman and become a father.
Robinson realized at the age of thirteen that he was gay, a frightening thought for the boy given that penalties in England for same-sex sexual activity included prison terms at the time.
Robinson, a longtime supporter of and former volunteer for London's Gay Switchboard help-line, was attending a 1982 benefit for the organization when he met the woman with whom he would eventually live and have two children.

 Tom Robinson Band
That’s when the Tom Robinson Band were in their real heyday; a time when TRB were as widely publicized and admired among new music fans as bands like the Jam and the Clash.
Robinson has claimed that the record is in no way representative of what the group was like, but he also describes Café Society as Three Dog Night without the backing band, and that’s not wholly inconsistent with what’s on the record.
Tom had been flown to the US earlier in the year for a round of interviews in the US press, and now the whole band was over to show their stuff.

Yes, Tom Robinson is essentially a "mercurial" type, a wordsmith and vocalist who expresses himself through the Sun-in-Gemini activities of song-writing, singing, broadcasting and writing.
As with many folk with revolutionary Aquarius on their 7th House cusp, Robinson had ended up experiencing a rather shocking surprise as far as his capacity to form relationships was concerned, and moreover his relationship itself became shocking to others.
While the Mutable Overload in his chart indicates his ever-changeable life, Robinson's sexual fluidity comes more specifically from having a planet that rules a mutable sign ruling each of his houses of sexuality and romance, and both of these planets in aspect to the ruler of his Ascendant.

Amazon.co.uk: Power in the Darkness: Music: Tom Robinson   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Power in the Darkness is the album by which Tom Robinson's works have been measured; its consistency is all the more remarkable, since he'd written several keynote tracks while toiling in the go-nowhere folk trio Café Society (such as Robinson's defining anthem, "Glad to Be Gay).
Power in the Darkness is proudly defiant as the era that inspired "Up Against the Wall," "Ain't Gonna Take It," "Long Hot Summer," or "The Winter of '79," which level fierce disdain for social hypocrisy.
Keyboardist Mark Ambler is equally assertive on colourful Hammond organ swashes, while Robinson plunks down simple, legato bass lines, and Brian "Dolpin" Taylor keeps the beat pouncing, where others might let it loiter.
