Tom Flubacher Waddell, New Jersey-born decathlete in the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City and founder of the Gay Games, died of AIDS in San Francisco in 1987 at the age of 49, several months after Schaap had started work on this biography.
Waddell's later history is told in his own words, in the form of letters, which he began composing hours after her conception, to his daughter Jessica, who was four years old at the time of his death; the earlier history is filled in by Schaap.
Tom Waddell is more than just the creator of the Gay Games, he is someone who has dedicated his life to making people feel welcome, making them feel accepted, no matter what is different about them.

Tom Waddell was the founder and president of the San Francisco Arts & Athletics organization that presented Gay Games I in 1982 and Gay Games II in 1986.
He was a visionary who embraced athletics and the idea of a Gay Games as a celebration of the Gay and Lesbian community, as a showcase of athletic talent, a chance to openly compete, and an opportunity to be free.
The Tom Waddell Award was first presented at Gay Games III in 1990 to Gay Games co-founder Paul Mart of Palm Springs, California and Melbourne, Australia.

The July 30 San Francisco Examiner tells the story of author Dick Schaap's Gay Olympian: The Life and Death of Dr. Tom Waddell and, in the midst of Olympic fever, reminds its readers that the Olympics have had a checkered past when it comes to lesbian and gay recognition.
When Dr. Tom Waddell, an Olympic decathelete who competed at the 1968 Games, founded the Gay Games and dubbed them the "Gay Olympics," the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) sued him to prevent the event from using the word "Olympics," even as he was dying from AIDS complications.
But the Gay Games have flourished in Waddell's spirit, and the new book is a testimony to his efforts.
