Tom and Jerry did have its funniest moments though,even when Tom would get beat up by the neighborhood dog(Spike),or get in some hairy situation where Jerry the mouse always puts him,or ending up in some lamebrain scheme to get the mouse,which often ends with hilarious results.
That's was about to change......In 1963,animator Chuck Jones revised the Tom and Jerry franchise and brought it back to life which in turn produced several cartoons from 1963 to the last Tom and Jerry theatrical feature to be released by MGM in 1967.
However,Hanna-Barbera brought them back in 1975 as part of the Tom and Jerry Show which was a comeback for the cat and mouse team as their return to Saturday mornings,and again in the mid-1990's as "The Tom and Jerry Kids Show".

Tom and Jerry really jumped the shark with those lame puffball 70's cartoons where they were suddenly friends and Jerry wore a stupid looking red bow tie.
Old Tom and Jerry cartoons were great, but when they stared to go with the newer style animation and the new title screen with the different opening credits music, the one where tom appears in the "o" on tom and Jerry floats down and lands on the "y" in jerry.
HBs Tom and Jerry work at MGM with full animation (and big-time studio dollars to finance the budget of each cartoon) is where one really has to appreciate their genius.

There are infinite explanations for this, starting with the way we remember Bugs, Daffy, et al as imitable--any attempt to quote "Tom and Jerry" would quickly turn into a game of charades, as their stories are often told in pantomime.
"Tom and Jerry" is harmless fun even at its most sadistic; the duo's tendency to wind up in flface is more potentially offensive than any of the head pounding and dynamite swallowing.
