Tom and Jerry were an animated cat (Tom) and mouse (Jerry) team who formed the basis of a massively successful series of theatrical short cartoons created by animators William Hanna and Joseph Barbera (later of Hanna-Barbera fame) and produced by Metro-Goldwyn Mayer from 1940 to 1958.
The MGM animation department was shut down in 1957, and the final of the 115 Hanna and Barbera Tom and Jerry shorts, Tot Watchers, was released on August 1, 1958.
In 1986, MGM was purchased by Ted Turner.

I enjoyed tom and jerry when I was growing up and my son is loving them as much as I do.
Classic Tom and Jerry, the old fun ones, there were a few of the less amusing of the 60s which I never thought were up to the quality of the old ones, but most of these are the old ones, I enjoyed them as much as my boys!

Some New Tom & Jerry cartoons were retreads of the original classic MGM T&J theatricals; e.g., the basis for the first New T&J produced, "Stay Awake Or Else...," was Sleepy-Time Tom (1951).
Plus, the color scheme for Tom's fur, which was originally dark blue, grey and white in the MGM theatricals, was now grey and white, patterned loosely after Tom's fur color in the Chuck Jones/Sib-Tower 12 T&Js from the 1960s.

Maltese would work with Jones again in the mid-1960s for the later MGM Tom and Jerry shorts, and again shortly before his death, for some made-for-TV shorts, though it does not appear that Jones took his suggestions for the sequel to Duck Dodgers.
Described by Katz as a vivacious blonde lyrical soprano of Broadway musicals, then the Metropolitan Opera, she starred in two MGM films of the early 30s but was fired when she put on too much weight.
