  Tomás Luis de Victoria
Victoria's music reached great fame in its time, especially his masses, and, though unusual, all his works were published in the composer's lifetime.

 Biography
We have a chronology of Tomás Luis de Victoria in his historical, cultural and musical context.
He was born in Avila around 1548, as the seventh child of Francisca Suarez de la Concha and Francisco Luis de Victoria.
Victoria was promoted to chapel master of this center, and thereby acquired new obligations: he was in charge of the musical education of the choirboys, he taught the most capable students in counterpoint and the elements of composition, and in general he supervised all music in all churches linked to the Collegium Germanicum.

DoveSong.com -- The Music of Tomas Luis de Victoria
Composed at the end of the 16th Century, and the beginning of the 17th Century, the music of Victoria was written for the church, to be sung as a part of the Catholic liturgy and all of the texts are in the Latin language, the official texts of the church...mostly scripture from the Vulgate Bible.
Victoria composed twenty masses, 44 motets, 36 hymns, 16 alternating plainsong magnificats (plus a magnificent work for two choirs and another for three), ten sublime Marian antiphons, 7 psalm settings for double choirs, 4 sequences, some pieces written to be included in the liturgy, and a body of music composed for Holy Week services.
But Victoria's music would be forgotten today, were it not for a few learned individuals who know the importance of these works and keep the flame alive, and a few brave CD labels, choirs and singing ensembles who have committed some of the works to disc and perform the music in public.

 HOASM: Tomás Luis de Victoria
After serving as a choirboy at Avila Cathedral under the maestros de capilla Gerónimo de Espinar and Bernardino de Ribera, Victoria went to Rome around 1565 and entered the Jesuit Collegium germanicum; he met Palestrina, who was maestro di cappella at the nearby Seminario romano, and may well have studied with him.
That Victoria succeeded in publishing nearly his entire oeuvre during his lifetime, generally in sumptuous editions, makes clear that he had the support of wealthy patrons.

Victoria's is one of the most beloved of these settings, and the Choir of The Church of the Advent has sung his version of the Reproaches for decades.
Victoria's setting is best understood with reference to this history, for although he strays entirely from the musical material of the Reproaches chants, he adheres unwaveringly to the form of the chant texts.
Victoria's setting of the Trisagion involves two separate choirs: the first chorus sings the Greek text, while a second chorus echoes the first with a Latin translation of the Greek.

Victoria's potential was such that while still a teenager he was sent from his home in Spain to study music in Rome.
Although Victoria wasn't one of the more prolific composers of his time, many of his masses and motets stand among the greatest and most beautiful masterpieces of the late Renaissance.
While Victoria may not be as prolific a composer as others in the Late Renaissance, the works he composed have a distilled beauty that comes not from artifice or embellishments, but from the harmonic progress and interplay of voices.
