In stark contrast to other musicians of his era, Tomaso Albinoni did not pursue wealthy patrons in order to support the creation of his compositions, at least not until the death of his father in 1709.
Albinoni had been considered a prolific composer in his time, yet with the loss of this collection as well as other written pieces missing over time, the remaining body of his work is comparatively small.

Tomaso Albinoni was born in Venice in 1671.
Albinoni and his music first came to the attention of the public when his first opera, Zenabia, Regina de Palmireni, and first collection of instrumental music, Sonata a tre, op 1, were performed towards the end of the 17th Century.
Albinoni treats the oboe as though it is the violin (the instrument he had most to do with) by leaving barely any room for the oboist to take a breath - like on the violin, where breath breaks aren't needed.

Renowned Venetian violinist and prolific composer, Albinoni produced more than 50 operas (Rodrigo in Algeri, 1702) most of which were staged in Venice and secular instrumental works (Adagio for Organ and Strings).
Most of Albinoni’s operas have been lost, but a few arias from them remain.
The popular "Adagio in G minor" was arranged, or rather reconstructed, for organ and strings by the 20th century Italian musicologist, Remo Giazotto, from a six-bar fragment of music by Albinoni.

There used to be a recording by Erato with all 3 movements of the 3 string symphonies, but then they wouldn't be all adagios for people who want their classical music slow and soft.
This CD was pleasing overall due to the fact that most of the Albinoni recordings I have heard tend to sound like the strings are slightly out of tune or warped in the adagio passages.
Not the case with this nicely packaged CD and the adagios of the concertos and especially the string symphonies at the end are patiently and hauntingly rendered.
