Topic: Tomcat Alley

F-14 Tomcat - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The F-14 Tomcat was the first and best known of the new highly successful generation of US teen-series air superiority fighters which were designed incorporating the experience of air combat in Vietnam against Migs.
The Tomcat was not only the most powerful and maneuverable fighter at its introduction, it would remain competitive with the best air superiority 4th generation fighters until its retirement.
The Tomcat was intended as an uncompromising air superiority fighter and interceptor, charged with defending carrier battle groups against Soviet Navy aircraft armed with cruise missiles.

In fact, this book is the result of many years of Tomcat photography by Dave and a host of other photographers.
Dave has successfully varied the images so that you see the full gamut of camoflage schemes and special markings carried by the Tomcat from its inception until September 1997, when image and information collection for this book was finalized so that it could be published.
In addition to the excellent selection of photographs, there is a section in the rear of unit patches and stickers covering all Tomcat operating squadrons.

It was in the Middle East that Tomcats were initiated into combat during encounters with Libyan fighters over the Gulf of Sidra in 1981 when several Sukhoi SU-22 fighters were shot down.
The F-14 with its Phoenix air-to-air missile coupled with airborne early warning aircraft is able to simultaneously intercept, engage and destroy up to five incoming enemy aircraft out to distances in excess of five hundred miles from a carrier task force.
The decision to decommission the F-14 is mostly due to the intensive maintenance required to keep the Tomcats operational.

TARPS (Tactical Airborne Reconnaissance Pod System)
The Tomcat was selected due to its impressive offensive/defensive performance capabilities.
When a Tomcat returns from a reconnaissance mission, the pod is opened and film is rushed to processing.
TARPS pods are routinely carried under the fuselage of F-14D Tomcat fighter jets as they fly Operation Southern Watch missions, enforcing the "no-fly" zone over Southern Iraq.

For the past two years, while the sun was setting on the iconic F-14 Tomcat, aviation photographer and author Erik Hildebrandt has been capturing the final defining moments of the few remaining F-14 squadrons in the US Navy Fighter community.

 Honour. Pride. Tradition. Tomcats.
During the build-up to the show, rumours throughout the year varied from 'diamond six' formations to not seeing any Tomcats at all and back again… blood pressures were going up and down and deep breaths were taken.
The Tomcat doesn't tend to create the same visual effects, vapour wise, as the 'new kid on the block' (or even the legacy Hornet for that matter) but, being honest, who cares - I'd go as far as saying that it was the finest fast jet demo I've seen in the last two years.
The Tomcat just got the nod for the best display of the show although the VFA-106 demo is one fine display which exhibits the agility and power of the Super Hornet with great ease; not to mention the fact that it shows off the Rhino's ability to make its own clouds!

I only had the pleasure of working on a Tomcat once here at Pax River, but I'm glad I had the opportunity to see and work with one up close and personal.
I can't remember the last time I saw one flying around the base, and it seems that Tomcats don't frequent the airshow circuit as much as they used to.
