Tome City was born on April 1, 2005 after the eight towns of the former Tome County (Ishikoshi-machi, Towa-cho, Toyosato-cho, Toyoma-machi, Nakada-cho, Hasama-cho, Minamikata-machi and Yoneyama-cho) and Tsuyama-cho from Motoyoshi County were merged into one.
It is located in the northeast edge of Miyagi Prefecture (about 70 km north from Sendai) and adjoins Ishinomaki City in the east, Kurihara City in the west and Ichinoseki City, Iwate in the north.
The population of Tome City is 91,905 (Feb.28, 2004) and has an area of 536.38 square kilometers.

Through nine separate mergers under the revised municipality merger promotion law, which was designed to streamline local governments and decrease the burdens of small towns throughout the country, the total municipality count in Miyagi Prefecture was reduced from 71 to 36.
On April 1, 2005, all towns in the Tome district (dissolved by this action) merged with Tsuyama town in the Motoyoshi district and created the city of Tome.

It is Tome town of Tome city, which is famous for retaining many old buildings and is often referred to as the Miyagi version of the Meiji-Mura Museum.
Former Tome Public Primary School, which is opened to the public as the Education Museum, was originally built in October 1888.
The former Tome Police building has been rebuilt as the only Police Museum in Japan, and displays wooden jails, police uniforms and previously used equipment.

One of Kuma's projects cited by the jurors is the Noh Stage in the Forest, in Toyoma, Tome-gun, Miyagi ken. This is part of the Toyoma Noh School, which continues a theatrical tradition that dates from the 16th century.
Original Noh performances were in the open air, and Kuma's intention was to make his architecture, through it's wood detailing, fuse with the surrounding natural forest.

On the 1st of April, our school, Nishikiori Elementary School, was transferred from Towa Town to Tome City, because of the unification of nine towns into one city, Tome City.
Especially this year, the fourth graders are working together with the community towards the protection of fish and plants living in the swamp of Hataori.
In October, the students will present their activities to all in attendance at the meeting of "The Forum about the swamps of Miyagi, 2005".I, as principal, will do my best to educate the students.
