Tomintoul is one of the newer distilleries having started production in 1965 with 2 stills and later increased to 4 about 10 years later.
Tomintoul is mostly used for the Whyte and Mackay blends that I so thoroughly like so it should be no surprise that I think of this pretty highly.
Tomintoul bills itself as "The Gentle Dram" and wile that is true among the 3 or so offerings I've had that doesn’t not mean it is weak.

The village of Tomintoul is generally thought to have been founded in 1750 by Alexander, fourth Duke of Gordon, but in fact the initial surveys were carried out in 1775.
The water supply was upgraded in 1890, coal replaced peat as the major domestic fuel by 1920, and in 1949 electricity was introduced.
By that time, Tomintoul was already able to hold its own as a popular tourist destination.

Although the Catholics of Tomintoul and district were sometimes reduced to worshipping in a field, there appears to have been a small church built in the late 1750’s: there are definite mentions of a small churdh at Balavlaiiç near the junction ot the Lecht and Dufftown roads.

Tomintoul is part of the Glenlivet Crown Estate, and is such very well looked after.
The Routes that are laid out by the Crown Estate surprised me, I was expected rolling pathways and no Technical bits, boy was I surprised, I was a sort of XC with massive hills in experience.
The best thing to do when you arrive at Tomintoul is to visit the Tourist Centre and get one of their Cycling Leaflets, although I will advise you to get one for the Walks as well because on the routes the Walkers have more of the sign posts.
