Grunnen til at denne forskningen startet, var at Tomlinson Holman, som hadde jobbet med lydsporet til filmen "Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom", spilte av Laserdisc utgivelsen av denne filmen på sin egen hjemmekino.
Tomlinson Holman tok derfor med seg LaserDisc-platen i miksestudioet for en sammenligningstest mellom LaserDisc-platen og den originale lyden.
Overraskende nok hørtes de helt identiske ut. Konklusjonen ble at det var de ulike akustiske forholdene i en stor kinosal/miksekino og et mindre rom, som var årsaken til den overdrevne diskanten.

A more plausible explanation may be that the name is an acronym for Tomlinson Holman EXperiment.
Tomlinson Holman is a sound technician and professor, and was the original inventor of the THX system.
He left Lucasfilm in the early 1990s, but the name, a striking and immediately recognizable trademark, along with the THX "Wow" trailer, have stuck.

Experiments with stereo sound began at Bell Labs in the early 1930s, including one experiment in which Leopold Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra were captured by microphones in the Academy of Music in Philadelphia and relayed over 15 KHz phone lines to the labs in New Jersey.
In discussion after the meeting one participant suggested that the processing from storage to reproduction environment might include at least some compensation for the acoustic characteristics of the listening environment.
