Bolin had made a name for himself with The James Gang along with his own bands Zephyr and Energy, bands that combined fusion with blues and more straight-forward rock.
Bolin cut two records Teaser and Private Eyes that were excellent collections of his funky playing that was at once soulful and explosive.
Bolin has a rather thin voice but it’s still perfect for the material which is mainly carried by his inventive guitar work.

Greg Prato of Billboard.com is reporting that former DEEP PURPLE/JAMES GANG guitarist Tommy Bolin's younger brother, Johnnie, has been working closely with producer Greg Hampton on outtakes from the recording sessions of Bolin's lone two solo releases, 1975's "Teaser" and 1976's "Private Eyes", for future release.
Bolin was one of the most versatile guitarists to emerge during the early '70s, but his career was cut short by a drug overdose after he had opened a show for JEFF BECK in Miami.
Basically from the time Tommy lost the feeling in his left hand and had to have the guitar tuned to a chord and just slide up and down the neck.

Those familiar with Tommy will probably be close with their guesses.
The first half of "Bagitblues Deluxe" is clearly the "Marching Powder" riff (as is Journey 2 for that matter), albeit in proto/early forms.
If you aiready own Whips and Roses vol one then go and buy this album.There is some great guitar work on here Tommy Bolin was one of the greatest, but sadly overshaddowed in his short lifetime.

Bolin had the world at his beckoned call; he was young, extremely talented and had nothing but opportunity in front of him.
The guitar is typically beyond reproach, the instrumentals are incredible showcases of jazz-blues-rock fusion that proves unequivocally and repeatedly that BolIn could play anything with expertise and flair like few have that come before and after his demise.
Bolin's story is not unlike another great guitar player named Hendrix, although his legacy does not mirror the great one's musically based on the recordings he left behind, his life certainly parallels Hendrix in some ways and you have to wonder how far he would have taken it if he were to be alive today.

Soon after that, Tommy joined The James Gang (at the suggestion of original member, Joe Walsh), replacing guitarist Domenic Troiano (who in turn went on to join The Guess Who).
The song appears twice on the new CD - once in acoustic demo form, and another early version with Bolin's band in L.A. Bolin's talent encompassed several musical genres, and it shows in the 13 tracks on the new CD.

Tommy Bolin left his home in Sioux City Iowa for Boulder Colorado where he became a member of Zephyr the first band signed out of the state of Colorado.
Tommy came to us from the mile high city of Denver, Colorado and stayed at least a mile high until he died from a drug-induced heart attack at the age of twenty six.
