Tommy Byrne (baseball) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tommy Byrne, born Thomas Joseph Byrne ( December 31, 1919 in Baltimore, Maryland), is a former Major League Baseball starting pitcher who played for the New York Yankees (1943, 1946-51, 1954-57), St.
Byrne was a hard-thrower pitcher who never hesitated to pitch inside, but he had really struggled with his control most of his career.
In a 13-year career, Byrne compiled a 85-69 record with a 4.11 ERA in 1362 innings, and had a disappointing 0.74 strikeout-to-walk ratio (766-to-1037).

Tommy Byrne not only had the best RA on the list, but also lapped the field in innings pitched: He's the only pitcher in major league history to walk a batter an inning for more than 100 innings in a season.
The 1951 season was par for the course for Byrne, who went 85-69 in his career (pitching mostly for Casey Stengel 's Yankees) despite walking 1,037 batters in 1,369 innings.
It's safe to say that Byrne was the most wildly effective (or is it effectively wild?) pitcher in major league history.

Tommy Byrne, a left-hander, is the career leader for walks-per-nine-innings at 6.9.
For baseball, that means a lefthander should be better than a right-hander for determining where a pitch should go and how the body should function in the delivery.

Because of their perceived willingness to do anything and spend any amount for a championship, the Yankees are sometimes referred to as the " Mafia " (they have also been occasionally referred to as an " Evil Empire ").
It is a heated debate whether this phenomenon is positive or negative for baseball, and whether a strict salary cap would make the sport fairer and increase parity among the large-market and small-market teams.

In baseball's growing years pitchers were seen as any other position player; they were to perform at their spot come hell or high water, were only relieved in emergencies or blowouts, and then often switched with another player in the field.
Mound distance didn't expand to 60 feet, 6 inches until 1893, balls were much less lively, and throwing a dirty or lopsided one out of a game seldom happened.
