Tommy Flowers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1942, Flowers was posted to Bletchley Park, 50 miles (80 km) northwest of London, to join the code breaking efforts there.
Flowers countered that the British telephone system used thousands of valves and was reliable because the electronics were operated in a stable environment that included having the circuitry on all the time.
After the war, Flowers was awarded limited recognition through an Order of the British Empire at the lowest level of MBE (member) and £1,000.

 Tommy Flowers, MBE (1905-1998)
Flowers, an engineering graduate, was involved in experiments with electronic telephone transmissions at Dollis Hill, the research arm of the Post Office (which at that time oversaw the nation's communications).
Flowers asserted that the problems inherent in Heath Robinson could not be solved and that a radical shift in design philosophy was required.
Flowers was instructed that, to be of any use, the Mark II must be in place by June 1944.

 BBC - h2g2 - Tommy Flowers
Tommy proposed replacing one of the punched tapes with an array of valves and thus did away with the synchronisation problem.
Tommy said that if they weren't switched on and off, they were as reliable as any other piece of electrical gear.
Tommy now had the bit in his teeth and was so convinced that his electronic machine would work that he built it anyway.

Colossus computer - Facts, Information, and Encyclopedia Reference article
Tommy Flowers, an engineer brought in to assist with machinery to break the Enigma machine, spent ten months building Colossus at the Post Office Research Station, Dollis Hill, North London.
Thus, Colossus could not be included in the history of computing hardware for many years, and Flowers and his associates also were deprived of the recognition they were due.
Colossus documentation and hardware were classified from the moment of their creation and remained so after the War, when Winston Churchill specifically ordered the destruction of most of the Colossus machines into 'pieces no bigger than a man's hand'; Tommy Flowers personally burned blueprints in a furnace at Dollis Hill.

 Technology: Ancillary fields: Computers.
Thomas (Tommy) Flowers a G.P.O. Dollis Hill top engineer and brilliant electronics expert, was called in at the suggestion of Alan Turing and it was Flowers who proposed an all electronic machine, i.e., all valves (vacuum tubes) rather than the mixture of valves and relays.
Tommy Flowers' major insight was to propose that the wheel patterns be generated electronically in ring circuits, not mechanically, thus doing away with one paper tape and completely eliminating the synchronisation problem.
Flowers had established decisively and for the first time that large-scale electronic computing machinery was practicable.

How a Computer saved the world !!
Sir Flower's computers were able to break NAZI secret codes in minutes, giving the Allies the upper hand in their war to save England, retake Europe and stop the NAZIs and their lunatic leader Adolph Hitler.
Sir Thomas Flower's Colossus was a descendent of automation technology he'd developed in the 1930's for the British Telephone Establishment.
It took Tommy a mere six months to complete his machine, and he set about, with the help of the Mathematicians and Code Breakers of Bletchley Park, writing it's first programs to decrypt the German ciphers of the Lorenz machines late in 1942.

DIY Calculator :: First Electronic Computers
By a happy quirk of fate, the electronic engineer Tommy Flowers (1905-1998) had been working on a programmable machine to automate the switching of telephone calls.
Based at the Post Office research laboratories in London, Flowers was convinced that vacuum tubes were the way to go, which went against conventional wisdom based on the fact that the tubes in radio sets failed so often.
But Flowers realized that the primary failure mechanism was the stress associated with turning the tubes on and off, and he was convinced that they would work reliably over long periods if they were simply left powered up all of the time.
