 Tommy McCarthy | BaseballLibrary.com
McCarthy's statistics are unimpressive for a Hall of Famer, but his creative innovations left an indelible mark on the game.
McCarthy had played for manager Frank Selee's Oshkosh champions in the North Western League in 1887, and after four years in the American Association was reunited with Selee in Boston.
Selee encouraged innovative baseball, and McCarthy is credited with perfecting, if not inventing, the hit-and-run; runner-to-batter signals; and an outfield trap, designed to freeze forced baserunners, where if the runner stayed on base McCarthy would trap the ball and get at least a forceout and possibly a double play.

Los Angeles Dodgers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tommy Lasorda was a 49-year-old former pitcher (never very successful in that capacity), who had been the team's top coach under Alston, and before that had been manager of the Dodgers' top minor league team.
The pitching staff remained strong, anchored by Don Sutton and Tommy John.
The Dodgers won NL West titles in both 1977 and 1978, both times defeating the Philadelphia Phillies to advance to the World Series, only to be defeated both times by the Yankees.

McCarthy took the long way, not the wrong way, to Hall   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-19)
To compound the case against McCarthy, Bill James, probably the best baseball writer in America of those with whose work I am familiar, recently pointed out (in his revised and updated "Historical Baseball Abstract") that McCarthy is the only player in the Hall who ever played in the Union Association.
James was not putting McCarthy down; the point was that the UA, which lasted one season (1884), should never have been classed as a major league in the first place, and that its listing as such was because of a mistake Ernest Lanigan, apparently an early chronicler of the game.
So, nondescript as his playing was, the fact McCarthy was the catalyst of one of the most important rule changes in the history of baseball more than justifies his election to the Hall, inappropriate as that election was.
