BBC - Comedy - Guide - Trinder Box
Born in Streatham, south London, on 24 March 1909, Tommy Trinder was one of the best-loved comedians in Britain either side of the Second World War, his catchphrase, 'You lucky people!', and trademark pork-pie hat becoming nationally known.
Trinder made his first stage appearance in 1922 and enjoyed minor successes in music-hall, working men's clubs and revue before making many films (he was an adept actor) from 1940.
This assuredness permitted him to be more adventurous than many of his contemporaries, and so Trinder Box - his first and only starring TV series - had a much looser format than similar ventures, the style of the show changing from week to week at the whim of the star and the producer.
