Tompall Glaser is the great, unsung hero of the outlaw movement in country music that lasted from the middle '70s and into the 1980s.
In the grain of Tompall's voice was the everyman that Waylon was too tough to be and Willie was too tender to be.
Tompall could wring the truth from a song by the sheer power of his ordinary voice.

Tompall's "Streets of Baltimore" (co-written with Harlan Howard) also became a hit for Bobby Bare in 1966.
Tompall had also become a close friend and business associate with Jennings, but the two eventually had a major falling out.

Jim Glaser, the youngest of The Glaser Brothers, has resurrected his solo career with this album filled with re-makes of older material from his past, and some tasty new tunes.
As a solo recording act Jim Glaser was the most successful of the three Glaser brothers, scoring 22 Billboard charted hits (1968 — 1986) compared to brother Tompall Glaser’s 8 Billboard singles and brother Chuck’s lone entry.
It was good to know that Glaser had made the songs his own by interpretation as well, of course, as by the fact that they are his own, too.

Tompall, however, deserves far more recognition for his achievements.
Tompall and his brothers, Chuck and Jim, hailed from Spaulding, NE, and started singing together as the folk trio Tompall & the Glaser Brothers in the late '50s.
Further Tompall's hits from that decade include "T for Texas" and "Drinking Them Beers," though these are by no means his best material.

Tompall, Chuck and Jim Glaser draw the audience into a hand-clappin, foot-stompin' sing-a-long on the classic country song, "T for Texas." The tight harmonies of the brothers reflect their close-knit family ties.
They pursued solo careers, but now the brothers are back together, merging their musical direction for what they term "the most honest music" they've been involved with.

The Rogue is a companion disc to Bear Family's first Tompall Glaser CD, The Outlaw.
The new recordings are melancholy and mellow renditions of such favorites as Eddy Arnold's "I'll Hold You in My Heart" and the musty traditional tune "My Pretty Quadroon," while the "lost" ABC album is much better and progresses logically from his previous two "outlaw" albums from this period.
Despite the rarities and promise of lost treasure, The Rogue is merely pleasant and inessential for all but the most devoted followers of Tompall Glaser.

Then Tompall, the group's driving creative force, started getting a little bit weird, pioneering, in fact, the rebellious "outlaw" sound that Waylon & Willie & The Boys took to the bank later in the decade...
Notable here is their cover version of John Hartford's "Gentle On My Mind," a song that the Glasers invested in when they set up their own publishing house...
An interesting footnote to both Glaser's commercial career and to the '70s "outlaw" scene, but ultimately -- as Glaser himself says in the liner notes -- not music you'd go back and listen to often.

A second irony: in the mid '70s, Glaser became one of the first Nashville country stars to abandon Music City's poppy version of country music and join the "outlaw" movement spearheaded by Texans like Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings.

Perhaps this is to be expected, since they were already "names" at the time this CD was originally released: Waylon as a performer, Willie as a songwriter.

Willie and Waylon were pure gold after this, and while Jessi Colter & Tompall Glaser were not heard from much afterward, they do live on here.

The album flew out of record stores and soon became the first album in country music history to be certified platinum.
